Job summary

Telecon-Design-USA in the Tacoma, WA region is hiring a Traffic Control Flagger. You will establish, maintain, and remove temporary traffic control zones for construction and utility projects, directing motorists and pedestrians to keep crews safe.

This role requires safety focus, reliability, and comfort working outdoors in varying weather. Valid ATSSA Flagger certification or ability to obtain upon hire is required, and travel up to 20% may be needed.

  • Communicate with crew, supervisors, contractors, and the public about traffic flow and safety.

Job description

The Traffic Control Flagger is responsible for establishing, maintaining, and removing safe temporary traffic control zones for construction, utility, and roadway projects. This role plays a critical part in protecting crews, motorists, and pedestrians by ensuring traffic is safely directed through or around active work zones. The ideal candidate is safety-focused, dependable, and comfortable working outdoors in fast-paced environments and varying weather conditions.

This role is based in the Tacoma, Washington region.

Pay Range: $23.00 - $32.00 per hour

  • Set up, maintain, and remove temporary traffic control devices including cones, barricades, signs, barrels, arrow boards, and delineators
  • Direct vehicle and pedestrian traffic using stop/slow paddles, hand signals, and radio communication
  • Perform lane closures and traffic shifts in accordance with approved traffic control plans and safety regulations
  • Monitor work zones continuously to ensure traffic control devices remain properly positioned and effective
  • Communicate with crew members, supervisors, contractors, and the public regarding traffic flow and safety concerns
  • Assist with loading, unloading, transporting, and organizing traffic control equipment and materials
  • Operate company vehicles and safely transport equipment to and from job sites
  • Identify and report unsafe conditions, damaged equipment, or motorists failing to comply with traffic direction
  • Maintain a strong focus on public safety and ensure compliance with all company, state, and federal traffic control regulations
  • Perform basic maintenance and inspection of traffic control equipment
  • Complete daily work logs, safety documentation, and other assigned reports
  • Support general labor duties on project sites as needed
  • Work flexible schedules including nights, weekends, overtime, and emergency response assignments when required

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or GED preferred
  • Valid driver’s license with acceptable driving record required
  • ATSSA Traffic Control Technician or Flagger Certification required (or ability to obtain upon hire)
  • Willingness to travel up to 20% of the time required
  • One year of previous traffic control, flagging, construction, utility, or roadway experience preferred
  • Knowledge of work zone safety practices and traffic control standards preferred
  • Ability to read and interpret traffic control plans and project layouts is a plus
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills
  • Ability to remain alert and make quick safety-focused decisions in high-traffic environments

Physical Requirements & Working Conditions:

  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, and lift up to 50–70 pounds throughout the shift
  • Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, and wind
  • Comfortable working around high volumes of moving traffic and construction activity
  • Ability to work extended hours, overtime, weekends, and varying shifts as needed
  • Must wear required personal protective equipment (PPE) at all times on job sites
