Qualifications

• JD from an accredited law school and admission to a U.S. state bar (Illinois preferred).
• 10+ years of experience in trademark law, with focus on U.S. and international clearance, prosecution, and enforcement.
• Strong legal writing, research, and communication abilities.

Responsibilities

• Manage domestic and international trademark portfolios, including strategic counseling, clearance, prosecution, and maintenance.
• Perform and analyze U.S. and global knockout and comprehensive clearance searches with actionable risk assessments.
• Draft and respond to office actions, oppositions, and cancellations before the USPTO and TTAB.
• Develop and execute brand enforcement strategies, including cease and desist programs, online takedowns, and anti-counterfeiting initiatives.
• Coordinate with foreign counsel on international trademark filings and disputes.
• Advise on trademark use in advertising, social media, e-commerce, packaging, and branding campaigns.
• Provide IP support in transactions, including licensing and due diligence reviews.
• Assist in federal court trademark matters, including pleadings and discovery.
• Maintain high standards of communication and responsiveness in client-facing interactions.

Job description

Flener IP & Business Law is seeking an experienced Trademark Attorney with 10+ years of experience to join our team of dedicated IP professionals. The ideal candidate will be well-versed in trademark portfolio management, enforcement, and brand strategy, with a focus on delivering practical, business-oriented solutions to clients ranging from emerging startups to global brands.

We envision this primarily as a part-time position and offer flexibility in structuring the role and schedule. However, we are also open to considering a full-time arrangement for the right candidate.

This is a unique opportunity to work at a Chicago-based, woman-owned IP boutique that combines deep legal expertise with a collaborative, flexible environment. The attorney will work directly with partners and clients, providing strategic counsel across a range of trademark matters.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

• Manage domestic and international trademark portfolios, including strategic counseling, clearance, prosecution, and maintenance

QUALIFICATIONS

• JD from an accredited law school and admission to a U.S. state bar (Illinois preferred)
• 10+ years of experience in trademark law, with a strong focus on U.S. and international clearance, prosecution, and enforcement
• Demonstrated skill in conducting and interpreting trademark searches and providing actionable legal advice
• Strong legal writing, research, and communication abilities
• Detail-oriented, efficient, and capable of managing multiple projects independently
• Familiarity with IP docketing systems and digital brand protection tools is a plus
• Professional, collaborative, and eager to contribute to a small team environment
• An existing book of business is a plus, but not required. We welcome candidates who bring client relationships or are interested in developing a practice within a supportive, entrepreneurial environment.

The firm prefers a part-time arrangement for this role, with flexibility around the specific schedule and hours. We are also open to a full-time position depending on the candidate’s experience, interests, and fit with the firm.
