Job summary

AECOM is seeking a motivated Traction Power Engineer to join our team in Philadelphia. You will design and analyze DC/AC traction power systems for railways and LRT, collaborating with senior engineers on real-world projects.

You will assist in substation, OCS, and third-rail systems analysis, generate schematics and layouts using CAD software, and perform power calculations. AECOM offers growth in a global infrastructure company with a hybrid work model.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

  • Assist senior engineers in design and analysis of traction power distribution systems (substations, OCS, third rail).

  • Perform voltage drop, current flow, and power system performance calculations.
  • Prepare technical reports, specifications, and construction documents.
  • Conduct site inspections and assist in testing and commissioning activities.
  • Ensure compliance with standards (NESC, IEEE) and maintain project records.

Job Description

AECOM is seeking a motivated and enthusiastic Traction Power Engineer to join our team. This position offers a valuable opportunity to gain hands‑on experience in the design, analysis of DC or AC traction power systems for railways, light rail transit (LRT), or other electrified transportation networks. The candidate will work closely with experienced engineers and contribute to real‑world projects, gaining practical knowledge in a dynamic and challenging environment.

Responsibilities:

Assist senior engineers in the design and analysis of traction power distribution systems, including substations, overhead catenary systems (OCS), and third rail systems.

Support the development of electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and equipment layouts using CAD software (e.g., AutoCAD, MicroStation).

Perform calculations related to voltage drop, current flow, and power system performance.

Assist in the preparation of technical reports, specifications, and construction documents.

Conduct field inspections and site visits to gather data and observe construction activities.

Assist in the testing and commissioning of traction power equipment.

Assist in the preparation of as‑built drawings and documentation.

Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor.

Collaborate with other engineering disciplines and project stakeholders

Ensure compliance with relevant industry standards and codes (e.g., NESC, IEEE).

Maintain accurate project records and documentation.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

BA/BS + 4years relevant experienceor demonstrated equivalency of experience and/or education

Understanding of electrical power systems and circuit analysis and electrical theory

Familiarity with AC and DC power concepts

Strong interest in railway or transit systems

Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and specifications

Knowledge of power system analysis software (e.g., ETAP, SKM Power Tools)

Knowledge of Traction Power Load Flow Simulation Software’s( e.g, Train, ETRAX, Openpowernet)

Valid US Driver’s License required to visit project sites, clients, and other AECOM offices. As a condition of employment, selected candidate must pass a Motor Vehicle Records review.

Preferred Qualifications

6 years work experience in performing Traction Power projects

Electrical Engineering Degree with a focus on Power Systems

Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)

Ability to work independently and as part of a team

Familiarity with AutoCAD or similar drafting software is a plus

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills

Professional Engineer(PE) License

Strong work ethic and attention to detail

Ability to learn quickly and adapt to new technologies

Desire to work in a fast paced dynamic work environment
