Job description

SMS Mill Services, LLC, located in Burns Harbor, IN, is seeking a dependable and safety-focused Track Repair Laborer to support the inspection, maintenance, and repair of track systems and related infrastructure. This position plays a critical role in ensuring safe and efficient operations by assisting with track repairs, material handling, and routine maintenance activities.

SMS provides a comprehensive range of services for steel mill customers. We partner with our customers to design custom, cost-effective solutions, which focus on adding value and achieving goals for the operation and the environment. Our range of services includes, but is not limited scrap yard management, finished or semi-finished product services, melt shop services, logistics/transportation support, and slag processing. We are onsite on Cleveland Cliff’s property.

Responsibilities
  • Assist with inspection, maintenance, and repair of track systems
  • Remove and replace rails, ties, ballast, and related components
  • Operate hand tools, power tools, and track maintenance equipment
  • Load, unload, and transport materials and supplies
  • Perform general labor duties including digging, lifting, carrying, and cleaning work areas
  • Follow all safety protocols and company procedures
  • Work effectively as part of a team in outdoor environments and varying weather conditions
  • Report safety concerns or equipment issues promptly
Requirements
  • High school diploma or GED preferred
  • Previous construction, labor, or track maintenance experience preferred but not required
  • Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions
  • Ability to lift up to 75 pounds repeatedly
  • Willingness to work overtime, weekends, or varied shifts as needed
  • Strong work ethic and commitment to safety

Schedule & Compensation:
  • Monday-Friday, days
  • Possible working overtime on nights and weekends if derailment happens
  • Hourly Rate: $28.53
  • Must be able to pass physical and drug screen
