Job description

This is a fulltime position located at the State Capitol Welcome Center in Baton Rouge, LA.


The Louisiana Office of Tourism is committed to promoting Louisiana as a top travel destination and growing the state’s tourism industry to make tremendous economic impacts in all 64 parishes. To accomplish that goal, we have developed strategic marketing initiatives to maximize our efforts.


No training or experience required.

Job Duties:


  • Meets and greets traveling public, welcoming them to Louisiana.

  • Gives innovative and engaging tours of the State Capitol and capitol grounds to school groups, dignitaries, and all manner of visitors.

  • Listens to questions and provides appropriate answers and counsel on how visitors may spend their time in Louisiana.

  • Encourages visitors to spend more time in Louisiana by suggesting alternative routes and activities.

  • Answers inquiries, in person, by telephone, email, or other means, about what there is to see and do in Louisiana.

  • Works with other counselors and supervisor to secure reliable information on current activities, festivals, attractions, lodging, restaurants, and other tourism related businesses in order to be knowledgeable about pertinent events, exhibits, activities, and new developments in tourism business, and to continually increase general knowledge of the state.

  • Works with other travel counselors and the supervisor to continually compile, file, and update reference materials, and utilizes the internet responsibly in order to increase the resources available and to find answers’ to visitors unusual questions.

  • Attends and participates in job safety training, position and center specific training, and other courses that may be required or recommended.

  • Undertakes clerical assignments including but not limited to brochure ordering and inventory, photocopying, filing, regular entry of visitor register information into the ZIP code database, and brochure placements in racks.

  • Schedules tours in Outlook and desk calendar.

  • Must demonstrate and utilize advanced computer skills and knowledge of a wide range of general and proprietary software, Office Suite, Outlook (word processing, spreadsheet, electronic mail, and others) usage of a wide variety of online forms and internet portals. Must demonstrate and exemplify responsible usage of the internet.

  • An ideal candidate will have a background in customer service, hospitality, or tourism.

  • Bilingual preferred but not required.


Position-Specific Details:

Appointment Type: This is a full time probational appointment; current full time classified employees may be required to accept a probational appointment.


Work Schedule: The State Capitol Welcome Center is open 8:00 am - 4:30 pm daily. This position may be required to work on weekends or holidays. Travel may be required.

This position is in a Career Progression Group to a Tourism Information Counselor 3. As part of a Career Progression Group, vacancies may be filled from this recruitment as a Tourism Information Counselor 1, 2, or 3 based on the qualifications of the selected applicant.
