The School District of Philadelphia seeks an Associate General Counsel, Torts to provide litigation guidance and oversee complex matters for the Board of Education and district employees.

This role focuses on defending sex abuse exception cases under Pennsylvania tort law, advising senior leadership, supervising junior counsel, and shaping district-wide litigation strategy in alignment with legal opinions and policy goals.

Qualifications

  • Extensive knowledge of common laws and the state and federal laws particularly as they relate to administrative, fiscal and regulatory functions of the School District or personal injury claims.
  • Judicial proceedings and the rules of evidence as related to the area of specialization.
  • Principles, practices, methods and techniques of legal research.
  • Governmental laws, including tax levy measures provided under state statutes.
  • Proficiency with personal computers and software applications such as word processing, databases and spreadsheets.
  • Ability to analyze, organize and evaluate complex cases and present material clearly in memos, briefs and opinions.
  • Draft legal instruments and proposals, negotiate terms, and manage a high-volume workload.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships and exercise sound judgment.

Responsibilities

  • Directly handles, oversees and manages lawsuits arising from the sexual abuse exception to immunity and other litigation as needed.
  • Provides counsel and guidance to the General Counsel, Administration and Board on litigation matters and liability minimization.
  • Represents the District and its officers in varied transactions and litigation.
  • Leads complex legal issues and develops optimal assessments and solutions for the District and Board.
  • Conducts District-wide professional development to improve management of school legal matters.
  • Participates in planning and implementation of programs in the Office of General Counsel.
  • Defends lawsuits and claims, conducts discovery, prepares witnesses and arranges settlements in the District's best interest.
