Job summary

FedWriters, Inc. seeks a Research Analyst to synthesize radar datasets from NSSL, quality-control data, and build a linked database of tornado observations. This role directly informs understanding of tornado evolution and how it interacts with the environment.

The position is full-time and hybrid, based in Norman, OK, with 90% on site at NSSL and some field deployments. Candidates should have an MS degree (PhD preferred) and extensive experience with weather radar data and scientific publishing.

Qualifications

• MS degree in meteorology, atmospheric science, or a related field.
• 8+ years of professional and/or academic experience.
• Experience with weather radar observations and polarimetric data interpretation.
• Experience with Doppler velocity dealiasing techniques.
• Experience deploying mobile weather instruments and familiarity with fixed/mobile radars.
• Familiarity with radar‑based QC software (Python ARM Radar Toolkit, RadX, Solo3).
• Experience with Python and data workflows.
• Established record of leading scientific research and publishing results.

Responsibilities

• Assist NSSL scientists to compile, document, quality control, and analyze research radar data of tornadoes observed at close (<15 km) range.
• Seek NSSL and open-source external radar datasets, convert them to a common format, QC Doppler velocity data, and cross-reference with ground surveys.
• Create and maintain a radar tornado database including system attributes, velocity metrics, and links to data.
• Collaborate with NSSL scientists to study tornado evolution and publish results in reports/journals; present at conferences.
• Contribute to data collection with NSSL RAPTORs and design observational strategies for close-range radar observations.
