Job summary

The National Severe Storms Laboratory (NSSL) seeks an experienced meteorology researcher to assist in compiling, documenting, and quality-controlling close-range tornado radar data. You will locate datasets, convert formats, and cross-reference with damage surveys to build a robust tornado radar database.

Applicants should have an MS in meteorology (PhD preferred), 8+ years experience, and strong skills in radar interpretation, Doppler de-aliasing, Python workflows, and field project design.

Qualifications

• MS Degree in Meteorology or related field; PhD preferred.
• 8+ years of professional and/or academic experience.
• Experience with weather radar observations and quality control of data (base and polarimetric).
• Experience with Doppler velocity dealiasing techniques.
• Experience deploying mobile instruments and familiarity with fixed/mobile weather radars.
• Familiarity with radar QC software such as Py-ART, RadX, Solo3.
• Proficiency in Python or other data analysis languages.
• Field project design/management experience.
• Proven track record of leading scientific research and publications.
• Must complete an IT security awareness course within one week of starting.

Responsibilities

• Assist scientists in compiling and analyzing close-range radar data of tornadoes.
• Locate NSSL datasets and external datasets for research.
• Convert radar datasets to a common format and quality-control Doppler velocity information.
• Cross-reference radar data with ground-based tornado surveys.
• Maintain a database of observed tornadoes and develop community contribution framework.
• Document observing radar systems and data attributes for reproducibility.
• Collaborate with scientists to study spatiotemporal tornado evolution and impacts.
• Publish findings in reports and refereed journals and present at conferences.
