MacLean-Fogg is hiring a Tool & Die Maker Trainee on the 2nd shift at our Chesterfield, MI facility. This development role supports tooling fabrication, modification, and repair while building skills in blueprint reading, precision measurement, machining, and die assembly under supervision.

In this on-site program, you will read prints, participate in machining planning, and grow proficiency in shop equipment, safety, and quality standards while contributing to efficient tooling operations.

Responsibilities

• Assist Tool and Die Makers with fabrication, modification, and repair of dies and tooling components.
• Read and interpret blueprints, part prints, engineered drawings, and specifications with supervision.
• Support machining plans, including material selection, tooling requirements, and operation sequences.
• Measure, mark, and lay out workpieces using precision instruments; set up and operate manual equipment under guidance (mills, lathes, surface grinders, drill presses, band saws, ID/OD grinders).
• Assist with machining calculations (speed, feed, depth of cut); monitor equipment for out-of-tolerance conditions and report findings.
• Inspect finished components using micrometers, calipers, height gauges, etc., to verify conformance.
• Assist with die assembly and bench work, including fitting, polishing, minor adjustments; manage steel inventory for tooling.
• Maintain tool room equipment and work areas per 5S and Lean standards; follow safety, environmental, and quality procedures.
