Job summary

Zurn Elkay Water Solutions Corporation in Lumberton, NC is hiring a Tool & Die Maker to join our manufacturing team. You will set up and run CNC and manual machines, inspect parts for accuracy, and contribute to die design and tooling improvements.

Ideal candidates have a Tool & Die degree or journeyman certification, strong blueprint reading, and hands-on experience with lathes, mills, grinders, and drill presses. Occasional shift flexibility may apply.

Qualifications

  • Tool & Die Associate’s Degree or Journeyman Tool & Die Maker certification required.
  • CNC machining experience required.
  • Strong knowledge of blueprint reading, precision measuring tools, and machining processes.
  • Experience operating manual and CNC machine tools such as lathes, mills, grinders, and drill presses.

Responsibilities

  • Analyze specifications and lay out metal stock for dies and tooling.
  • Set up and operate CNC machines and manual equipment to manufacture and repair dies and tools.
  • Troubleshoot tooling issues and support process improvements.
  • Study blueprints, compute dimensions, and plan operation sequences.
  • Inspect finished parts using calipers, micrometers, and gauges to ensure quality.
  • Design tools, jigs, fixtures, and templates as work aids.

Job Description
  • Analyzing specifications, laying out metal stock, setting up and operating CNC machines and manual equipment (mills, lathes, etc.), and fitting and assembling parts to manufacture and repair dies, cutting tools, jigs, fixtures, and gauges.
  • Troubleshoots complex tooling and machining issues, performs precision adjustments, and supports process improvements.
  • Studies blueprints or specifications and visualizes shape of die, part, or tool.
  • Computes dimensions of assembly and plans sequence of operations.
  • Measures, marks, and scribes metal or plastic stock to lay out machining, using instruments, such as protractors, micrometers, scribes, and rulers.
  • Sets up and operates machine tools, such as band saw, lathes, milling machines, drill press and grinders to machine parts.
  • Lifts, positions, and secures machined parts on surface plate or worktable, using hoist, vises, v-blocks, or angle plates.
  • Smooths and polishes flat and contoured surfaces of parts or tools, using scrapers, abrasive stones, files, emery cloth, or power grinder.
  • Verifies dimensions, alignments, and clearances of finished parts, using measuring instruments, such as calipers, gauge blocks, micrometers, and dial indicators.
  • Fits and assembles parts, using bolts, glue, and other fasteners, and hand tools, such as hammers and wrenches.
  • Checks part or tool for hardness using hardness tester.
  • Repairs or modifies tools and dies, using machine tools and hand tools.
  • Designs tools, jigs, fixtures, and templates for use as work aids.
  • Tests die for first hit to ensure quality of part.
  • Inspects die for smoothness, contour conformity, and defects by touch or visually, using loupe or microscope.
  • Available to work any shift as needed.
Qualifications / Requirements
  • Tool & Die Associate’s Degree or Journeyman Tool & Die Maker certification required.
  • CNC machining experience required.
  • Strong knowledge of blueprint reading, precision measuring tools, and machining processes.
  • Experience operating manual and CNC machine tools such as lathes, mills, grinders, and drill presses.
  • Ability to troubleshoot tooling and assist with process improvements and repairs.
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods of time during the shift.
  • Ability to lift, push, and pull up to 50 pounds with or without assistance.
  • Frequent bending, stooping, kneeling, and reaching while performing job duties.
  • Ability to use hands for fine manipulation, gripping, and operating hand tools and precision instruments.
  • Ability to work in a manufacturing environment with exposure to noise, moving mechanical parts, oils, and metal debris.
  • Must be able to visually inspect parts and read precision measuring instruments.
  • Must be able to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE) such as safety glasses, gloves, and steel-toe shoes.
