Job summary

The Manufacturers' Association is seeking a skilled machinist to analyze specifications, lay out metal stock, and operate machine tools to fabricate and repair dies, gauges, and fixtures. Proficiency in GD&T, blueprint reading, and CNC setup is essential.

Between 4 and 10 years of trade education or apprenticeship is expected, with relocation possible for the right candidate. Experience with CAD software and CNC lathes is a plus.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

  • Study specifications and visualize materials and machines to fabricate parts.
  • Set up and operate machine tools; verify conformance to specs.
  • Measure and mark stock; ensure accuracy with dial indicators and micrometers.
  • Calibrate tools and inspect finished parts; support assembly when needed.
  • Coordinate with team and supervisor on instructions and deadlines.

Job description

POSITION SUMMARY:

Analyzes specifications, lays out metal stock, sets up and operates machine tools, and fits and assembles parts to fabricate and repair metalworking dies, cutting tools, jigs and fixtures, gauges, and machinists’ hand tools, applying knowledge of tool and die design and construction, shop mathematics, metal properties, and layout, machining, and assembly procedures.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
  1. Studies specifications, such as blueprints, sketches, models, or descriptions and visualizes product to determine materials required and machines to be used to fabricate parts.
  2. Computes dimensions, plans layout, and determines assembly method and sequence of operation.
  3. Measures, marks, and scribes metal stock for machining.
  4. Sets up and operates machine tools, such as lathes milling machine, and grinder, to machine parts, and verifies conformance of machined parts to specifications.
  5. Lifts machined parts manually or using hoist, and positions and secures parts on surface plate or worktable, using devices, such as vises, V-blocks, and angle plates.
  6. Verifies dimensions, alignments, and clearances, using measuring instruments, such as dial indicators, gauge blocks, thickness gauges, and micrometers.
  7. Heat-treat tools or parts.
  8. (May) Connects wiring and hydraulic lines to install electrical and hydraulic components.
  9. (May) Examines standard or previously used dies, tools, and jigs and fixtures and recommends design modifications regarding construction and function of part.
  10. (May) Develops specifications from general descriptions for specialty tools and draws or sketches design of product.
  11. Communicates with co-workers and supervisor to receive instructions and coordinate activities.
  12. Inspects and measures parts.
  13. Calibrates and maintains personal tools.
  14. Experience with CNC machines a plus.
  15. All other duties as assigned.

Use of CAD systems for design of parts or producing prints.

TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

Between 4 and 10 years of trade school, vocational education, work experience, or apprenticeship.
