Job Purpose:
The Thrift Store Lead reports directly to the Thrift Store Manager. handles assigned logistics of the HSSA Thrift Store, including; donation pickups, ongoing and new maintenance projects, furniture repair and restoration, cash handling, retail merchandising, and in-store marketing and promotions. May provide assistance in training of volunteers, as needed.

- Adheres to all HSSA safety policies and reports injuries to HR Director within 24 hours of injury.
- Adheres to all local laws regarding personally owned animals such as licensing, shelter, medical care, etc.
- Provides accurate information to the public at all times.
- Makes a good appearance and has the ability to deal tactfully and effectively with the public.
- Maintains a positive and respectful attitude.
- Communicates regularly with manager regarding department issues.
- Demonstrates flexible and efficient time management and ability to prioritize workload.
- Consistently reports to work on time prepared to perform duties of position.
- Is willing to participate in meetings with other HSSA personnel and share ideas and suggestions designed to improve working conditions and the organization's ability to meet its objectives.
- Can lift up to 50 lbs. long periods of standing, bending, and intermittent exposure to high temperatures.
- Is willing to assist in animal care and handling during emergencies.
Essential duties and Responsibilities:
- Represent the Humane Society of Southern Arizona in a professional, polite and enthusiastic manner.
- Provide welcoming service by greeting and assisting guests, and responding to guest inquiries and complaints to ensure excellent levels of customer service are maintained at all times.
- Promote repeat business and word-of-mouth advertising through the building of excellent customer relations.
- Enforce and maintain store safety and cleanliness, and all health and security rules and procedures.
- Works with Thrift Store Manager, to identify projects to create and sustain a successful retail store: discount programs, inventory selection, display options, sales events and operational procedures.
- Assists as needed in processing all incoming merchandise, to include sorting, cleaning and repairing of all goods. Also responsible for properly disposing of any donated goods which are not usable by the Store.
- Assists in all areas of the store as needed
- Accept and separate items that may be used by HSSA shelter, including recycling programs.
- Assists in pick-up service and building new business partners for donated items.
- Assists in monitoring merchandise standards to ensure quality inventory.
- Assists in merchandise displays throughout Thrift Store to create a pleasing shopping environment.
- Assist in daily cash handling, credit card transactions, and reporting
- Assist in training volunteers.
- Keep volunteers informed of changes in Thrift Store of HSSA programs or protocol.
- Perform customer service to the standards set forth in HSSA’s employee manual.
- Maintains physical condition of thrift store, both interior and exterior
- Identify, report and correct safety hazards on thrift store premise.
- May train and supervise volunteers for Thrift Store.
- May drive company vehicle in performance of company business.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Working Conditions:
Work is performed at retail space. Potential exposure to hazardous chemicals, sharp objects and zoonotic diseases during adoption events. Field conditions may be encountered. Able to lift up to 50 lb., long periods of standing, bending, stooping, reaching and working outdoors in differing climates.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
in the absence of the Manager, supervises staff and volunteers. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with HSSA’s policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include planning, assigning and directing work; addressing complaints and resolving problems for the Store.
Performance factors and Necessary Skills:
- Communication and Contact: The Thrift Store Lead communicates effectively both verbally and in writing with superiors, colleagues and individuals inside and outside of HSSA; has tact and above average communication and customer service skills. The Thrift Store Lead must be able to maintain confidentiality and must be able to convey a positive and professional image to the public and employees.
- Attendance and Dependability: The Thrift Store Lead can be depended on to report to work at the scheduled time; is seldom absent from work; can be depended on to complete work in a timely, accurate, and thorough manner and is conscientious about assignments.
- Relationships with Others: The Thrift Store Lead works effectively and relates well with others including superiors, colleagues, and individuals inside and outside of HSSA and exhibits a professional manner in dealing with others and works to maintain constructive working relationships.
Skills:
- Ability to train volunteers and evaluate their job performance.
- Effective communication skills, both verbal and written.
- Working skills in report writing and maintaining records.
- Good working knowledge of office practices and procedures.
- Knowledge of applicable state, county and city laws and ordinances pertaining to animal ownership and care.
- Excellent communications skills in both written and oral form.
- Exceptional organizational skills.
- Simple business mathematics.
- Typing, computer and general office work experience.
Position Requirements
Qualifications/Educational Background:
- High School graduate
- Furniture repair, minor maintenance experience preferred
- Retail/Re-sale experience preferred
- Any combination of training and experience which demonstrates expertise and the knowledge and skills necessary for this position.
- Possession of a valid Arizona driver’s license and driving record acceptable to HSSA insurance carrier.
