Job summary

Working at Northern Virginia Family Services (NVFS) Thrift Shop, the Assistant Manager supports daily store operations and leads staff and volunteers to deliver a positive experience for shoppers and donors. The role collaborates with the Thrift Store Manager to achieve sales goals and oversees donations, pricing, merchandising, and social media efforts.

The position requires flexibility for evenings, weekends, and holidays, with a starting hourly rate of $20 and a 32-hour work week (Wed–Sat).

Qualifications

• Retail operations management knowledge including merchandising and service.
• Strong interpersonal, organization, and multi-tasking skills.
• Customer service oriented; ability to communicate effectively with staff, customers and donors.
• Supervisory experience preferred.
• Ability to resolve issues calmly and efficiently.
• Must accommodate the store schedule including evenings, weekends, holidays.
• Fluency in English; Spanish language a plus.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
• Willingness to learn emerging technologies to support communications, volunteer engagement, and operations.
• Comfort learning proprietary POS software.

Responsibilities

• Represent thrift shop with excellent customer service at all times; serve as role model and adhere to guidelines.
• Establish a donations collection process on collection days with greeting donors and evaluating items against guidelines.
• Maintain an attractive and convenient layout of sales floor.
• Oversee rotation of materials, visual merchandising, cleanliness and organization of sales floor.
• Maintain the correct quantity and quality of merchandise on display.
• Ensure displayed merchandising is maintained throughout the day.
• Generate awareness about store operations and build partnerships to encourage donations.
• Assist with intake of scheduled donations and track discrepancies.
• Ensure donations are recorded, presorted, and inventory is optimized.
• Assist Store Manager with pricing and broader sales strategy.
• Collaborate with staff/volunteers to sort, tag, and prepare inventory for sales.
• Resolve customer disputes per store policy.
• Create and post approved social media content and other marketing content.
• Ensure budgeted sales and net revenue goals are met daily/weekly/monthly.
• Identify staffing needs and supervise staff and volunteers.
• Train and develop store staff including volunteers.
• Prepare weekly schedules and prioritize tasks.
• Engage with community to solicit donations.
• Open/close store and manage day-to-day operations on assigned days.
• Background checks may be required; reliable transportation; ability to work holidays/evenings/weekends.
• Stand/walk/sit, lift up to 40 pounds and use POS equipment.
