Job description

Threefold Community Farm Hiring Dairy Farmer

About Threefold Farm

Our mission is to care for the land using biodynamics to grow nourishing food, foster a learning community, and build an inclusive social life serving our community and the public. Threefold Community Farm, a collaboration between The Threefold and Fellowship Foundations, is located on 220 acres in Chestnut Ridge, New York, near NYC. We integrate Biodynamic Land Care, Education, and Production, working with local organizations like Green Meadow Waldorf School, Otto Specht School, Endeavor 21+, and the Fellowship Community, an elder care community.

The Dairy operates on 40 acres with four to ten milking cows, using management-intensive grazing to promote healthy soils, animals, and consumers. We produce hay on 15 acres and sell raw and pasteurized dairy products, which are in high demand and often sell out quickly.

Dairy Farmer Position Overview

The Dairy Farmer will maintain a hospitable and safe environment for staff, interns, guests, and volunteers. Innovation and improvement in farming practices are encouraged, with opportunities to refine the operation. This full-time position, with variable hours and weekend work, directly impacts the community by providing quality dairy, contributing to farmer education, and creating a meaningful environment for guests and volunteers. Reports to the Farm Director and works with the Farm Team.

Responsibilities

  1. Biodynamic Practices: Implement and maintain Biodynamics across all dairy operations.
  2. Herd Management: Oversee breeding, calving, calf-sharing, weaning, and replacements while ensuring the health and safety of the herd.
  3. Pasture Management: Manage pasture rotation, soil health, and forage production.
  4. Equipment & Infrastructure Maintenance: Manage and maintain tractors, barns, livestock fencing, and milk processing equipment.
  5. State Inspection Compliance: Maintain detailed records and ensure compliance with state regulations.
  6. Hay Production: Manage hay production on 15 acres and handle purchasing as needed.
  7. Composting Operations: Oversee the farm’s manure composting.
  8. Milk Processing: Oversee the entire milk processing cycle, from animal to consumer.
  9. Business Management: Oversee day-to-day financial management of the Vegetable enterprise, as well as strategic long-term business operations including budgeting, financial planning, and marketing.
  10. Customer Relations: Maintain positive relationships with customers and partners.
  11. Staff & Volunteer Supervision: Educate and ensure staff and volunteers comply with milk ordinances and maintain a safe, welcoming environment.
  12. Collaboration: Participate in weekly farm team meetings and monthly farm advisory board meetings.
  13. Community Engagement: Foster connections with the Fellowship Community through social caregiving and member engagement.
  14. Educational Coordination: Collaborate with the Farm Educator on visitor and student interactions with the dairy operation.
  15. Adult Education: Contributes as an educator in the Year-Long Biodynamic Course.

Desired Skills & Experience

  1. Knowledge and interest in Biodynamics.
  2. Experience in dairy farming.
  3. Experience with hay production and tractor operation.
  4. Highly organized and with an attention to detail.
  5. Collaborative and communicative.

Salary: $50,000-$60,000, onsite housing available for rent.

Benefits: health benefits, retirement plan 403(b), and a potential tuition remission package with Otto Specht School and Green Meadow Waldorf School.
