Schedule: Typically Monday-Friday, 8-3:30 p.m., occasionally longer days.
Position Summary
The Third Grade Teacher provides instruction and supervision for students in grade 3. He/she must understand the emotional and educational needs of young children, communicate effectively, and respond appropriately to individual differences. The teacher works closely with the Director of Lower School, Associate Director of Lower School, faculty, students, parents and is guided by the Head of School.
Responsibilities
- Teach the third grade homeroom, managing curriculum, discipline, and classroom community.
- Plan and execute lessons using varied methods that align with divisional curriculum and the school's philosophy.
- Collaborate with colleagues and administrators by attending school-wide meetings, department sessions, Lower School faculty meetings, in-service days, and serve on committees as needed.
- Demonstrate enthusiasm for the School's City as Our Campus initiative by seeking meaningful community connections for experiential learning.
- Show commitment to the School's strategic priorities by designing interdisciplinary, student‑centered or project‑based learning experiences.
- Create and maintain an organized classroom environment emphasizing child safety and well‑being.
- Work on curriculum revision and program development with department teachers and the Director of Lower School.
- Commit to ongoing professional growth through development opportunities and participate in faculty evaluation and growth processes.
- Communicate regularly with parents through email, phone, student progress reports, and parent notices.
- Assist the admission process by meeting prospective families, attending admission events, and screening candidates.
- Complete student assessment reports (grades, conference comments, etc.) per school guidelines and deadlines set by the Director of Lower School.
- Perform additional duties such as attendance, lunch and recess supervision, chaperoning field trips, after‑school events, and other assignments.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements
A Bachelor’s degree in Education and experience teaching in an elementary setting is required; a Master’s degree or Reading Specialist certification is preferred. Candidates should maintain an educational philosophy aligned with that of the School, possess strong communication skills, and be proficient in educational technology. Experience in independent schools, responsive classroom training, and Readers and Writers Workshop training is preferred.
