Exponent is seeking a Thermal Sciences Associate – Chemical Engineer in Natick, MA, to join our Thermal Sciences Practice. You will analyze chemical, mechanical, and electrical systems and participate in investigations of failures in batteries, consumer products, and related systems.

The role emphasizes applying thermodynamics, heat and mass transfer, reaction kinetics, and electrochemical analysis to multidisciplinary problems.

Qualifications

• Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering required.
• Legal authorization to work in the United States without sponsorship.
• Hands-on experience in failure root-cause analysis.
• Strong background in thermodynamics, heat transfer, fluid mechanics, combustion, and measurement systems.
• Experience managing and executing experimental programs.
• Familiarity with process safety and risk assessment.
• Experience with electrochemical systems, battery testing, or related technologies.
• Proven ability to apply rigorous experimental methods to complex chemical-engineering problems.
• Outstanding verbal and written communication skills.
• Willingness to travel domestically.

Responsibilities

• Prepare proposals, budgets, and test plans.
• Design and construct test apparatuses and measurement systems.
• Execute tests, write reports, and present results to clients.
• Perform analyses and calculations to evaluate product performance and safety.
• Apply chemical engineering principles to assess failure mechanisms and risks.
• Support investigations involving battery and equipment fires and failures.
• Conduct field work and participate in evidence collection.
• Review background information and summarize failure event data.
• Identify opportunities and market services to internal and external clients.
