Job description

About Stone Power

The US needs 1.5 terawatts of new power by 2035. AI has scaled beyond our ability to build power, and the existing power supply chain is the bottleneck. You cannot buy a new gas turbine until 2030: order books at GE, Siemens, and Mitsubishi stretch past 2030. Turbine prices have nearly tripled since 2019. The future demands a new kind of hardware company, building a new kind of turbine. That’s Stone.

We are America’s Turbine Company, designing, fabricating, and deploying turbines for a $200B+ market that’s tripling by the early 2030s. We are building our own factories. We are delivering our own natural gas, steam, and advanced turbines. And we are doing it with an AI stack built specifically for hardware.

Natural gas turbines are the first leaf on a multi-decade tech tree. The same physics kernel, the same factory, and the same team will deliver natural gas turbines, nuclear turbines, geothermal turbines, and heat recovery systems. Nat gas is how we get going. Nuclear (on and off planet) is how we become a generational company.

Job Description

This role as a Thermal Design & Thermal Analysis Engineer focuses on the design, thermal management, and analytical evaluation of turbomachinery hardware and high-temperature gas path components. You will solve critical thermodynamic, heat transfer, and structural-thermal challenges across advanced turbine systems.

Responsibilities
  • Ownership of thermal designs and hot gas path components from concept through factory deployment and field validation.

  • Conduct engineering trade studies to select optimal thermal management and component architectures against performance and economic requirements.

  • Perform detailed thermal, fluid, and structural FEA/CFD modeling (including 0D/1D heat transfer models, thermal FEA, and fluid simulations).

  • Integrate thermal designs with structural engineering constraints, evaluating thermal stresses, creep, and fatigue life.

  • Select high-temperature alloys, superalloys, and thermal barrier coatings suitable for aggressive operating environments.

  • Collaborate with manufacturing teams and external vendors to develop production methods and tooling for high-temperature hardware.

  • Manage component development timelines, risk profiles, and economics.

  • Facilitate clear, cross-functional engineering communication across the organization.

Basic Qualifications
  • MUST HAVE MADE AND DELIVERED HARDWARE BEFORE. Everyone at Stone has pushed hardware. It’s in our blood.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Aerospace, or Materials Engineering (or equivalent).

  • Hands-on experience designing thermal or fluid-thermal systems and selecting high-temperature hardware components.

  • Demonstrated experience performing thermal and fluid analysis using both first-principles/hand calculations and FEA/CFD tools.

Preferred Skills and Experience
  • Experience with turbomachinery, gas turbine hot gas path components, or high-temperature power cycles.

  • Experience conducting combined thermal and structural FEA analysis (Ansys, Abaqus, or similar).

  • Experience in CFD thermal-fluids modeling (StarCCM+, Fluent, or similar).

  • Experience designing components in 3D CAD (NX, SolidWorks) using GD&T.

  • Background in structural analysis and mechanics of materials, with ability to bridge thermal and structural engineering domains.

  • Knowledge of superalloys, high-temperature metallurgy, heat treatment, and specialized thermal coatings.

  • Familiarity with applicable industry codes and standards (ASME, BPVC, API).

  • Thrives in a fast-paced, scrappy, and entrepreneurial environment with tight time constraints.
