DEPT OF HEALTH SERVICES. The Arizona State Hospital (ASH) provides inpatient psychiatric care to persons with serious mental illness who need long‑term behavioral health care. ASH promotes hope and wellness for our patients and creates opportunities to participate in planning, delivering and evaluating services that assist with recovery. Treatment is individualized with goals that focus on education about an illness, instilling hope and improving one’s overall quality of life. The Arizona State Hospital has a wide range of positions available, from our direct care staff, nurses and behavioral health technicians to social workers, rehabilitation specialists and security to name a few. The Arizona State Hospital also offers 12‑hour shifts for our direct care staff as well as some alternative work schedules, flexible hours for non‑direct care staff. Job Summary

This position is eligible for a $5,000 hiring incentive. The Therapy Technician 2 works under general supervision of a certified/registered therapist and is responsible for a variety of activities, including active participation with therapeutic treatment teams, assisting in planning and carrying out rehabilitative treatment programs, assisting with and/or conducting therapy sessions in accordance with individual treatment plans, observing and recording a patient’s response to therapy and adjusting approaches, designing and constructing adaptive equipment, instructing patients in special exercises, communicating with the treatment team, establishing a safe therapeutic environment, escorting patients, preparing materials, consulting with supervisors, applying restraints as necessary, and participating in training and staff development.

Job Duties
  • Assisting in the planning and carrying out of rehabilitative treatment programs for assigned patients; conferring with members of the treatment or therapy team to determine the course of action in patient care and treatment; conducting and supervising patient activities (individual or group) on assigned unit.
  • Observing and recording a patient’s response to therapy, and adjusting approaches or activities when necessary to reach treatment goals and individual needs.
  • Interacting face‑to‑face with patients in a supportive/helping role in accordance with therapeutic program goals and objectives.
  • Instructing patients in special exercises to improve dexterity, balance, concentration, or other physical or mental capabilities.
  • Participating in establishing and maintaining a safe, orderly, and therapeutic environment; escorting patients to and from care units; preparing materials and equipment for treatment plan activities.
  • Being required to drive up to a 12‑passenger van and complete the hospital van safety training program.
  • Other duties as assigned related to the position.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs)
  • Fundamentals of rehabilitation, therapeutic treatment, and application of mental health principles and techniques.
  • Therapeutic practices and techniques of group and individual activities used in therapy.
  • Modification techniques to adapt to individual situations.
  • Established hospital policies and procedures and JACHO individual assessment standards.
  • Performance Management (PM), Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI), and Lean methodologies.
  • Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with patients, co‑workers, and families.
  • Interpreting activities and analyzing situations accurately and initiating effective actions or measures.
  • Motivating patients as appropriate by Individual Treatment Plans.
  • Maintaining sensitivity, objectivity, and flexibility under pressure associated with mentally/emotionally ill patients.
  • Communicating verbally and in writing.
  • Interpreting therapeutic activities to patients and appropriate others.
  • Supporting a diverse multicultural workforce that reflects the community, promotes equal opportunity, and creates an inclusive work environment free from discrimination.
Selective Preference(s)
  • 2+ years of experience in the healthcare field preferred.
  • Preference given to candidates with a COTA/L certification; special consideration for a certified lifeguard.
Pre‑Employment Requirements
  • Must possess a valid level one fingerprint clearance card issued pursuant to A.R.S. 41‑1758.07 or apply for a level one fingerprint clearance card within seven working days after beginning employment.
