East West College of the Healing Arts in Portland, OR, seeks an experienced instructor to teach Therapeutic Relationships for the Fall Term. The course explores touch, ethics, licensing, professionalism, boundaries, and client communication.
Responsibilities include delivering instruction, assessing learning with quizzes and assignments, maintaining attendance and grade records, providing feedback, and collaborating with faculty to integrate course concepts across the massage therapy curriculum.
October 3 -December 19; Saturdays 12:30pm to 3:30pm.
Students will examine the role and effects of touch, cultural differences regarding touch, personal touch history, strategies for establishing trust and emotional responses to touch. They learn about the legal and ethical requirements for massage therapists, including licensing regulations, standards of practice, scope of practice and professionalism. In addition, students explore the issues that contribute to effective communication with clients, including setting boundaries, active listening, assertive communication, managing transference and countertransference. Throughout the course, students work on developing professionalism, therapeutic presence and self-care skills.
