The Best Podcast & Video Editor Role Ever

Afford Anything (Paula Pant's Finance Podcast) · Remote · Compensation based on experience

What this job actually is

Afford Anything is Paula Pant's personal finance podcast. It's built on the idea that you can afford anything, but not everything, and on helping people get smarter with their money so they can build real wealth. The show is growing, and video is a big part of where it's going.

Our main content is long-form, conversation-driven interviews, similar in style to Diary of a CEO. Paula sits down with guests for in-depth conversations about money, investing, financial psychology, entrepreneurship, and building a life you want.

Here are a couple of recent episodes so you can see what we make:

  • https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QdGH7XO7HNw

We're looking for more than a technically great video editor.

We're looking for an editor in the fullest sense of the word: someone who can technically edit a beautiful video, produce excellent podcast audio, and use real editorial judgment to make the conversation itself better.

That distinction matters.

If there's a five-minute section that wanders away from the point of the episode, we don't want you to leave it in simply because nobody told you to cut it. We want you to notice it. We want you thinking about whether it serves the story, whether the audience needs it, whether it's likely to hurt retention, and whether the episode becomes stronger without it.

If a guest makes essentially the same point three times, catch it.

If an answer takes two minutes to get somewhere it could get in 45 seconds, notice that too.

If something is technically imperfect but emotionally important and cutting it would hurt the conversation, know when to leave it alone.

That's the level of judgment we're looking for.

At first, we'll work closely with you on bigger editorial decisions. We want to understand how you think, and we want you to explain why you'd cut something. As that trust builds, our goal is for you to increasingly own those decisions yourself.

This is still not a heavy motion-graphics job. Graphics, cards, images, text and sound design are there to support the conversation, not become the main attraction.

But it is a storytelling job.

And because we're a podcast first, audio matters just as much as video.

We're increasingly thinking about our episodes as one piece of content that should work whether someone is watching it on YouTube or listening without looking at a screen. That means the audio should sound fantastic with your eyes closed, while the video should still feel natural and intentional.

For example: removing filler words and long pauses may make an audio conversation dramatically better. But cut too aggressively and suddenly the video looks like one giant jump cut. We want someone who understands both sides of that equation. That's the kind of editor we're looking for.

What you'll actually do
  • Edit the main body of approximately two long-form interview episodes per week
  • Make technical and editorial cuts that improve clarity, pacing, storytelling and retention
  • Remove stutters, unnecessary filler words, repetition, false starts, duplicate takes and awkward pauses without making the video feel unnaturally chopped up
  • Identify tangents, redundant sections and stretches that aren't serving the episode, and recommend or make larger content cuts
  • Initially explain the reasoning behind major editorial decisions; over time, take increasing ownership of those decisions independently
  • Edit and polish podcast audio, including balancing audio between microphones and making sure the finished conversation sounds excellent as an audio-first experience
  • Make sure the video and audio work together so an episode is equally strong whether someone watches it or simply listens
  • Review YouTube audience-retention data, including drop-offs and spikes, and use what you learn to improve future edits
  • Bring your own understanding of audience behavior and long-form podcast storytelling to the table rather than relying exclusively on us to tell you what works
  • Add cards, graphics, images, text, motion graphics and sound design where they genuinely improve the viewing experience
  • Choose the right moments to insert Paula's subscribe ask, our lead-magnet CTA, ads and other mini-CTAs without interrupting the conversation
  • Over time, independently identify and edit strong 8–15 minute segments from full episodes
  • Help us test and refine how episodes open, whether that's a host intro, cold open, edited hook or another approach
  • Edit other content as needed, including course material and Paula's talking-head videos
  • Adapt as we test different editing styles and help us figure out what works
  • Deliver finished edits well ahead of publish dates
Who does well in this role

You're an editor, not just an operator. You don't think your job is to preserve everything that happened between “record” and “stop.” You think about what the finished episode should be. You can recognize the difference between something that is merely technically clean and something that's actually compelling.

You can follow complex conversations. Our interviews aren't surface-level conversations. Guests talk about investing, economics, behavioral finance, psychology, entrepreneurship and other nuanced subjects. You need exceptional English comprehension and the ability to follow an argument closely enough to know when something is essential, repetitive, off-topic or missing context.

You have strong editorial judgment. You can feel when a conversation drags, when a tangent has gone too far, when a moment needs room to breathe, and when shortening something would actually make it worse. You make thoughtful calls and you're comfortable explaining them.

You edit for both the eyes and the ears. You understand that something can sound perfect but look terrible—or look smooth while sounding painfully slow. You know how to tighten a conversation so the audio experience is excellent without turning the video into a mess of jump cuts.

You think about audience behavior. You don't edit in a vacuum. You're interested in why viewers stayed, where they left, what they replayed, and what we can learn from it. You're comfortable looking at retention data and allowing performance to sharpen your instincts over time.

You have an eye for design. Typography and layout matter to you, and when a graphic is called for, you can make it look good without a lot of back-and-forth. You're comfortable with motion graphics when a video needs them, and you know how a well-placed sound effect can make a moment land.

You're creatively flexible. Our visual and editorial approach is still evolving. We're testing different openings, pacing, graphics and ways of structuring episodes. We don't need someone who's attached to one formula. We want someone who can help us discover the right one.

You take initiative. You don't wait for a detailed brief on every video. You suggest cuts, try ideas, notice problems and actually care whether this week's episode is better than last week's. Ideally, you bring expertise to the team that we don't already have.

Nothing gets past you. You catch the awkward pause, repeated word, stray frame, typo, inconsistent audio, or tiny detail that needs fixing without someone else pointing it out. Somewhere in your application, include the phrase “this is the editing gig for me.” That's how we'll know that this is actually true about you.

You work ahead. We usually have footage weeks in advance, so we expect finished edits well ahead of publish dates, not the night before or the morning of. Hitting deadlines is a basic part of this job.

You communicate proactively. If something's unclear, you ask. If you'll be late, we find out early. If you have an idea, you share it.

This role probably isn't for you if you want to be told exactly where every cut and graphic goes, if your instinct is to leave every recorded minute in unless someone specifically tells you to remove it, if you usually finish close to the deadline, or if you think of editing as primarily a technical task.

That's not a criticism. It's just not what we need right now.

What we need from you
  • A portfolio that shows exceptional long-form editing; podcast or interview content is strongly preferred
  • Real experience editing both video and audio
  • The technical ability to create polished video and well-balanced podcast audio
  • Evidence of strong editorial judgment, not simply flashy editing
  • Exceptional English comprehension and the ability to follow nuanced, intellectually complex conversations
  • An understanding of long-form storytelling, pacing and audience retention
  • Experience using performance data or audience-retention data to improve content is a major plus
  • A strong eye for design and typography
  • Motion graphics and sound design experience
  • A track record of delivering on time or early
  • Initiative and a real interest in improving your craft
  • Fast, clear communication
  • Ideally, experience helping a podcast, YouTube channel or other long-form show become better over time—not just executing someone else's editing notes
What to expect

This role will initially be centered heavily on the video side of Afford Anything, but we're deliberately looking for someone who also has strong podcast-audio skills.Today, parts of our audio and video post-production happen separately. We're exploring a future in which an episode can have one cohesive editorial treatment and work beautifully across YouTube, Spotify, Apple Podcasts and wherever else our audience watches or listens.

We aren't expecting everything about that workflow to change on day one.We are hiring with that future in mind.

That means there's an opportunity for the right person to grow from editing our videos into taking broader ownership of how an Afford Anything episode comes together in post-production.

We're also still working out parts of our creative direction, which means we'll test different styles, pacing, graphics, openings and approaches. Sometimes you'll put real effort in something we ultimately decide not to continue with. That's part of experimenting, and we see it as progress, not wasted effort.

The role starts at around two long-form episodes a week. As the video side grows, we expect that to expand to two long-form episodes plus roughly four 8–15 minute segments per week.

There will also be opportunities to edit other content we produce, including course material and Paula's talking-head videos.

What you get in return is real creative and editorial input on a show that's growing. You won't just carry out someone else's vision. You'll help make the show better. You'll work closely with our Operations Manager and creative team, get clear feedback, and have room to earn significant trust and ownership as you show us what you can do.

We pay attention to people's potential, and we invest in the people who show it.

Compensation

The scope of this role is bigger than simply cutting video, and we're looking for real skill.

Compensation will depend on your experience, the quality of your work and the scope you're able to own. In your application, we'll ask you to share your expected monthly rate.
