Our client is seeking a skilled and detail-oriented Testing Facility Operator / Equipment Assembly Specialist to join our team at our Atlanta facility. This is a hands-on, dual-function role supporting our newly established Testing Facility. In the testing facility, the operator runs material processing trials, feeding customer sample material through separation and recovery equipment, capturing performance data, and documenting results that support our sales business cases and engineering designs. On the assembly floor, the specialist assembles, wires, and pre-commissions equipment and integrated systems before they ship to customer sites. The ideal candidate is mechanically capable, comfortable around industrial processing equipment, careful in data collection, and able to move fluidly between the lab and the assembly floor as project demand shifts.
Key Responsibilities:
- Set up, operate, and tear down material separation and recovery equipment (shredders, granulators, screens, air separators, eddy current and magnetic separators, optical/sensor sorters, and related conveyors) for customer sample trials.
- Receive, log, weigh, prepare, and stage incoming customer sample materials, and manage sample retention and disposal per protocol.
- Execute test plans defined by Process Engineering, including feed-rate, fraction collection, mass balance, and recovery/yield measurement.
- Accurately record trial data (throughput, recoveries, product purity, screen analysis, photos) and assemble it into clean test reports that support sales business cases and engineering design.
- Maintain lab housekeeping, dust control, and material traceability between trials to prevent cross-contamination of samples.
- Mechanically assemble equipment and integrated systems per drawings, bills of material, and assembly instructions, including structural, mechanical, and conveyor components.
- Perform basic electrical and control hookup, pneumatic and hydraulic connections, and panel mounting in coordination with engineering and controls personnel.
- Conduct fit-up checks, alignment, and pre-shipment functional (cold) testing of assembled equipment.
- Identify and flag missing, damaged, or out-of-spec parts, and support cycle counts and inventory accuracy on the assembly floor.
- Prepare equipment for crating and shipment, including as-built documentation support and tagging.
- Follow all safety procedures, including lockout/tagout, machine guarding, PPE, and material handling protocols.
- Operate forklifts and other material handling equipment, and support continuous improvement of lab procedures, fixtures, and assembly methods.
Preventative Maintenance:
- Perform and document scheduled preventative maintenance (PMs) on all testing-facility equipment in accordance with OEM and internal PM schedules.
- Conduct daily and shift-start inspections - lubrication, belt tension, wear parts, fasteners, guarding, and leaks - and log findings.
- Maintain dust collection systems, including filter inspection, cleaning, and replacement, to protect equipment and air quality.
- Replace wear components (screens, blades, liners, belts, bearings) before failure to minimize unplanned downtime.
- Track equipment uptime and downtime, identify recurring failure modes, and recommend corrective actions.
- Manage PM tickets, spare-parts inventory, and consumables so that maintenance is performed on schedule and parts are on hand.
- Clean, calibrate, and verify test instrumentation and sampling equipment to keep trial data accurate.
- Coordinate maintenance and repairs with engineering and the equipment manager, scheduling work around test trials to keep the facility available.
Requirements:
- High school diploma or GED.
- 5+ years of hands-on experience in industrial equipment assembly, mechanical maintenance, fabrication, or processing-plant operation.
- Ability to read and work from mechanical assembly drawings, P&IDs, and bills of material.
- Proficiency with hand and power tools, measuring instruments, and basic fabrication.
- Comfortable working around heavy rotating and processing equipment in a dusty industrial environment.
- Basic computer skills for data entry, reporting, and documentation.
- Experience in recycling, material recovery, or scrap processing (metals, e-scrap, wire and cable, battery, or paper) is preferred.
- Familiarity with separation technologies (size reduction, screening, density/air separation, magnetic and eddy current separation, optical sorting) is preferred.
- Forklift certification and OSHA 10/30 are preferred.
- Strong communication, organizational skills, and attention to detail.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
- Comfortable working in a physically demanding role that may involve standing, bending, and lifting for extended periods.
