Miami Valley Materials Testing Center, an A2LA accredited laboratory and Family Company of Applied Technical Services, is expressly designed to offer comprehensive single-source testing, analysis, and consultation services for automotive, aerospace, medical, as well as other various industries. Position Summary

The Test Technician I is responsible for supporting laboratory operations through sample preparation, routine testing, data collection, equipment maintenance, and documentation. This position assists with both mechanical and chemical laboratory activities, providing hands‑on support for material characterization, testing, and analysis programs. The ideal candidate is detail‑oriented, mechanically inclined, and willing to work across multiple laboratory disciplines while following established procedures, quality standards, and safety requirements.

Primary Responsibilities
  • Conduct sample preparation and assist specialists and engineers in performing laboratory tests.
  • Perform routine testing and gather data according to established procedures, specifications, and work instructions.
  • Support mechanical testing activities including:
    • Tensile testing
    • Hardness testing (Rockwell B & C, Brinell)
    • Corrosion testing
    • Fastener testing (torque/tension and coefficient of friction)
    • Metallographic sample preparation including cutting, mounting, polishing, and etching
  • Support chemical laboratory activities including sample preparation, testing, analysis, and inventory management.
  • Cut and prepare samples using laboratory equipment such as abrasive cutoff saws and related tools.
  • Interpret routine pass/fail test results and document findings accurately.
  • Review work orders, test requests, standards, and specifications before executing tests.
  • Complete reports, test records, and supporting documentation in accordance with laboratory quality requirements.
  • Troubleshoot, maintain, calibrate, and perform routine upkeep of laboratory equipment.
  • Maintain chemical, consumable, and equipment inventories and assist with procurement of approved supplies.
  • Use laboratory systems and technology platforms to track work, document results, and maintain records.
  • Work collaboratively with engineers, quality personnel, administrative staff, specialists, and other technicians.
  • Assist in other areas of the laboratory as needed.
  • Demonstrate flexibility and willingness to float between mechanical and chemical laboratory environments based on workload and business needs.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED required; Associate’s degree in a technical, scientific, engineering, or related field preferred.
  • 0-2 years of experience in a testing, manufacturing, quality, or laboratory environment preferred.
  • Mechanical aptitude demonstrated through previous work experience, education, technical training, military service, or personal projects/hobbies.
  • Basic technical knowledge with the ability to follow laboratory procedures, specifications, and testing standards.
  • Ability to safely operate laboratory equipment, testing instruments, tools, and machinery with training and supervision.
  • Ability to read, understand, and follow work instructions, testing procedures, and engineering specifications.
  • Strong problem‑solving skills, organizational skills, and attention to detail.
  • Basic math and computer skills, including familiarity with Microsoft Office applications.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with individuals across multiple departments and functions.
  • Working knowledge of Good Laboratory Practices (GLP), laboratory quality systems, ISO requirements, and safety procedures preferred.
  • Willingness to learn multiple testing disciplines and support both mechanical and chemical laboratory operations.
Additional Requirements
  • Valid driver's license preferred.
  • Ability and willingness to work overtime when required.
  • Ability to work safely in both laboratory and light industrial/shop environments.

  • Frequent standing, walking, bending, lifting, reaching, and handling materials, tools, and equipment.

  • Ability to operate laboratory equipment and testing machinery safely.
  • Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception.
  • Exposure to laboratory chemicals, testing materials, machinery, and equipment while adhering to established safety protocols and PPE requirements.
