Job Summary
Join as a Test Technician and play a vital role in ensuring the quality and performance of high-voltage, 3-phase power step-down transformers. You will perform a wide variety of electrical and mechanical tests to confirm compliance with engineering specifications, customer requirements, and IEEE standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform electrical and mechanical tests on power transformers (69kV–230kV) to ensure product compliance.
- Conduct dielectric withstand and thermal capability tests, including:
- Impulse Testing (up to 1MV)
- Applied Potential Testing (>400kV)
- Induced Testing (240Hz, >100kV)
- 3-phase 60Hz Performance Testing
- Verify control systems and instrumentation using VOMs, programmable controllers, and laptops.
- Interpret blueprints, schematics, and technical specs.
- Identify and report quality issues (NCRs); assist in root cause analysis.
- Maintain and calibrate test equipment as needed.
- Perform key transformer tests including:
- Turns Ratio, Polarity, DC Resistance, Core Loss, IEX
- Power Factor (INS), Insulation Resistance, Heat Run
- Impedance, Load Loss, Sweep Frequency Response (SFRA)
- BCT Testing, Oil Quality, Dew Point, Sound Test
- Voltage & Current Regulator Testing, Control Box Checkout
- Maintain detailed and accurate electronic test records and reports.
- Work with minimal supervision and perform witness testing in the presence of customers when required.
- Adhere strictly to all safety protocols, including arc flash safety procedures.
Required Qualifications
Education (One of the following):
- BSEE or equivalent (no experience required), OR
- Associate Degree in Electrical Technology with relevant experience, OR
- High School Diploma/GED with:
- Specialized electrical training and 3 years of QA/testing experience, OR
- 4 years of progressive experience in transformer testing.
Skills And Competencies
- Strong understanding of high-voltage electrical testing and transformer design principles.
- Ability to read and interpret complex blueprints, wiring diagrams, and industry standards.
- Skilled in troubleshooting electrical issues and configuring power test setups.
- Experienced with:
- Impulse Generators, Hi-Pot Equipment, Motor Generators
- Oscilloscopes, Bridges, Voltmeters, Ammeters, Power Factor Kits, SFRA Systems
- Proficient in data analysis and test documentation using electronic tools.
- Effective communicator and problem-solver with strong attention to detail.
Work Environment And Physical Requirements
- Work may involve climbing, lifting, and working on top of large transformer units (6 feet or higher).
- Must wear required PPE including arc flash gear and rated gloves.
- Commitment to maintaining a clean, organized, and hazard-free work area.
- Must be able to safely perform a minimum of two Special Tests.
