Coherent Corp. in Fremont, CA seeks an embedded software engineer to design, develop, and implement low-level firmware for STM32 MCUs and in-house test boards.

You will work closely with hardware teams to integrate boards into our software architecture and lead release and qualification for production. The role requires a BS/MS in EE and at least 2 years of experience, strong C/C++, C#, and VB.NET skills, and hands-on lab work with DMMs, oscilloscopes, and logic analyzers.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 2 years of experience in a similar embedded firmware role.
  • Advanced programming skills in .NET languages (C/C++, C#, VB.NET).
  • Experience reading electrical schematics and lab testing with DMMs/oscilloscopes.

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, and implement low-level firmware for STM32 MCUs and in-house test boards.
  • Collaborate with hardware designers to integrate new boards into software architecture.
  • Lead release and qualification processes for new instruments/boards.

  • Design and develop low-level software drivers (embedded firmware) in C/C++, C#, VB.NET for our in-house designed test boards and instruments.
  • Collaborate with hardware designers to integrate new boards into the existing software architecture.
  • Work closely with the hardware design team to debug new instruments/boards.
  • Lead the release and qualification process of new instruments/boards into production.
  • Read and interpret complex electrical schematics to support the development and debugging of hardware and software integrations.
  • Operate hands-on in the lab with digital multimeters (DMMs), oscilloscopes, and logic analyzers to test and validate designs.

Education & Experience

  • Minimum 2 years of experience in a similar position.
Skills
  • Advanced programming skills in .NET languages (C/C++, C#, VB.NET).
  • Experience with instrument communications protocols (GPIB, SCPI, i2c, UART).
  • A thorough understanding of high-speed digital data concepts and the ability to read and interpret electrical schematics.
  • Hands-on experience in the lab with essential tools such as DMMs, oscilloscopes, and logic analyzers.
  • Knowledge of Digital Signal Processing (DSP) is considered a significant advantage.
  • Proven ability to work collaboratively with hardware design teams and proficiency in debugging complex systems.
Working Conditions
  • This position is predominantly onsite
  • May require occasional off‑site meetings or travel
  • Regular use of a computer and other office equipment is necessary
  • Interaction with team members and external contacts is a regular part of the job
  • May require occasional overtime and flexibility in work hours to accommodate the executive’s needs
Physical Requirements
  • Sitting for extended periods while working on a computer or conducting meetings.
  • Use of hands and fingers for typing, writing, and handling documents.
  • Occasional lifting of objects or materials up to 20 pounds for administrative tasks.
  • Ability to communicate verbally and in writing.
  • Mobility within the office environment to attend meetings or interact with colleagues.
