Alternative Titles - Test Assistant (Field Engineer - Testing and Commissioning Engineering Assistant)

The Test Assistant provides test services to support the operation and maintenance of substation and electrical equipment under the guidance of a Test Supervisor, Project Test Specialist, Test Specialist, or Test Engineer. This position is part of a four-step progression designed to provide experience and training for advancement to the Test Specialist role.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

- A Bachelor's degree in engineering or engineering technology, OR an Associate's degree in electrical engineering or electrical technology, OR equivalent education in math and science.

- Valid motor vehicle license.

- Ability to stand during on-call assignments.

- Desirable skills include knowledge of transmission protection devices, relay testing, electrical protection principles, electronic and computer-controlled systems, networking, electrical codes, and safety procedures.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Perform power factor and breaker timing tests.
  2. Analyze and interpret test results and present findings.
  3. Conduct basic relay testing.
  4. Perform technical calculations for test applications.
  5. Conduct cable proof tests.
  6. Perform cable locating and fault locating services.
  7. Assist with the installation and testing of mobile transformers.
  8. Locate sources of radio and television interference.
  9. Test underground network protectors.
  10. Support troubleshooting and repair of electrical devices such as recloser controls, battery chargers, and voltage regulators.
  11. Adjust and repair substation meters, assist with substation modifications, and support power quality investigations.

SALARY: Starting at $41.17 per hour, with progression per union contract. See our career site for benefits overview.

POSITION DESCRIPTION:

This is a four-step progression position. The level assigned depends on education and experience. No experience is required for Step 1. Responsibilities include supporting operation and maintenance of substation equipment, performing tests, analyzing results, and assisting with transmission line testing.

For Test Specialist and Project Test Specialist levels, a minimum of 2 years of related experience with a Bachelor's degree, or 4 years with an Associate's degree, is required. These roles involve planning and performing testing, maintenance, investigations, and technical assistance.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

Internal and external posting. Candidates must pass the TECHtest. Bargaining unit employees have first consideration. All applicants are considered without regard to protected statuses. Emergency response duties are part of the role.
