Job summary

Birdon America Inc. is seeking a Test and Trials Lead in Bayou La Batre, AL. You will coordinate production efforts of subcontractors and Birdon direct trades on assigned vessel(s), leading test programs, procedures, executions, and reports.

The role requires extensive shipbuilding experience, strong leadership, and the ability to oversee shipboard testing, safety compliance, and collaboration with production management and trade supervisors. Travel and overtime may be required.

Qualifications

• Extensive leadership in test and trial environments.
• Experience coordinating multiple trades on ships.
• Knowledge of ship testing standards and procedures.
• Ability to read blueprints and interpret technical documents.
• Familiarity with safety regulations (OSHA).
• Proficiency with MS Office tools for reporting and planning.

Responsibilities

• Coordinate test programs, procedures, and approvals for vessel testing.
• Oversee test execution and produce Test & Inspection Reports.
• Develop ship sea and dock trials agendas and plans.
• Liaise with Production Managers, Ship Superintendents and Trade Supervisors.
• Ensure test prerequisites and scheduling align with production plans.
• Maintain attendance and flexible working hours as required.
• Contribute to design reviews from a systems operation perspective.

Test and Trials Lead

Indirect Bayou La Batre, AL, US

In this position, you will need to demonstrate strong leadership skills and industry knowledge to coordinate production efforts of all assigned subcontractors and Birdon direct trades on assigned vessel(s).

Roles and Responsibilities:

• Develop Test and Evaluation Program Plan (TEPP).
• Develop Test Procedures and work with customer for development approval.
• Oversee and manage the test execution per the approved test procedure.
• Produce Test and Inspection Report for each completed test activity.
• Develop Ship Sea and Dock Trials Agenda and Plan.
• Provide Trial Status Reports.
• Assist in development of the Accepted Ship Report (ASR).
• Lead Shipboard activities for inkling experiment.
• Responsible for shipboard systems testing, pipe testing, tank and other watertight testing as required.
• Liaison with Production Manager, Ship Superintendents and Trade Supervisors to ensure test pre-requisites are met prior to test.
• Liaison with Production Manager , Ship Superintendents and Trade Supervisors to ensure proper manpower is applied to each scheduled testing event as required.
• Regular attendance at work and the ability to work flexible hours, including overtime, weekends, and holidays.
• Comply with Company, federal, state, and local safety, ethics, and environmental rules, regulations, and policies while performing duties.
• Perform additional assignments as assigned.
• Ability to participate and add value to design reviews from a systems operation view.
• Ability to work with Production Control to schedule tests and their pre-requisites and their succeeding activities .

Qualifications / Skills / Experience:

QUALIFICATIONS & ATTRIBUTES

ESSENTIAL

DESIRABLE

High School diploma or GED equivalent

Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering or equivalent preferred.

Minimum twelve (12) years’ experience in Shipbuilding of which a minimum of seven (7) years in testing.

Previous supervision of multiple trades preferred.

Onboard ship engineering experience will be considered in leu of shipbuilding experience.

Ability to supervise and coach individuals.

Requires knowledge of and ship terminology, and Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) standards

Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite software including Word, Excel, Project and Outlook

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, general business periodicals, professional documents, Company policies/procedures, and governmental regulations.

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, verbal, or diagram form.

Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from senior management, employees, government officials, and the public.

Ability to read and interpret blueprints.
