Job summary

SSA Conventional, Inc. in Southern California seeks a Terminal Manager to oversee contracts and customer service for autos/RORO processes.

You will train staff, ensure safety and quality, and travel between terminals to stay current on operations and regulatory requirements. The role reports to the Regional VP and coordinates with the VP of the Auto Division, with responsibilities spanning safety, budgeting, and stakeholder relations.

Qualifications

• High School diploma or equivalent.
• 3–4 years in transportation/maritime industry with terminal ops supervisory experience.

Responsibilities

• Maintain stevedore and terminal contracts with ocean carriers.
• Supervise and sign off on all vessel and customer billing related to autos/RORO.
• Develop, negotiate, and implement contracts for stevedoring services.
• Develop and maintain relationships with customers with a focus on autos/RORO.
• Ensure compliance with organizational and customer requirements.
• Monitor operations to ensure staff comply with policies, safety rules, and regulations.
• Conduct safety audits and staff meetings; address safety concerns.
• Participate in hiring, discipline, and terminations of Union members.
• Establish contact with operational stakeholders (POLB, Agents, ILWU, etc.).
• Coordinate with customers and mechanics for repairs.
• Investigate accidents to improve safety procedures.
• Host quarterly customer operational reviews.
• Contribute to Capex, budgeting, and forecasting.
• Analyze financial data and P&L for profitability.
• Assess end-of-year performance and salary adjustments.
• Maintain company values and productive relationships with customers/vendors.

Job description

The Terminal Manager is responsible for contract and customer service to ocean carriers, OEMs, port authorities, processors, terminal operators, and agents. Ensuring all operations and personnel are properly trained and educated with respect to safety, accident prevention, cargo care, customer efficiency, lashing requirements, and quality assurance. This position requires regular travel to local and other operational sites to stay current on operational issues, terminal layouts, vessel configurations and stows, and to maintain strong working relationships with local ILWU, SSA, vehicle processors, and ocean carrier managers. While this position reports directly to the Regional VP, they will also coordinate and receive directions from the VP of the Auto Division.

• Maintain stevedore and terminal contracts with ocean carriers.
• Supervise and sign off on all vessel and customer billing related to autos/RORO.
• Develop, negotiate, and implement contracts for stevedoring services at the direction of the relevant Regional VP or the VP of the auto division.
• Develop and maintain business relationships with all customers with a focus on autos/RORO to understand their needs, concerns, and expectations.
• Ensure that all work is accomplished consistently with organizational and customer requirements.
• Monitor multiple operations to ensure that staff members comply with administrative policies and procedures, safety rules, union contracts, and government regulations.
• Promote safe work activities by conducting safety audits, attending company safety meetings, and meeting with individual staff members.
• Involvement in discipline and employment processes by making recommendations to hire, promote/demote, and terminate employment.
• Establish/maintain contact with all operational stakeholders (POLB, Agents, Port Captains, ILWU Management, and Business Agents, Chief Officers, Security, Vehicle Processors, etc.)
• Coordinate with customers and mechanics to perform repairs to damaged customer equipment and vehicles.
• Conduct investigations in conjunction with the relevant responsible operations person to determine causes of accidents and to improve safety procedures. Continually analyze operations for improvements and, as appropriate, issue corrective action reports.
• Host quarterly customer operational review meetings.
• Contribute to year-end financial processes such as Capex reporting, budgeting, and forecasting.
• Examine financial data and P&L statements to utilize them for improved profitability.
• Evaluate end of year job performance and salary adjustments.
• Maintain company values, rules, policies, and ensure that procedures are met to fulfill the company mission, as well as productive relationships with customers and vendors.
• Daily monitoring of vessel activity/productivity.
• Establishing a formal training program for new-hire Operations Labor Managers.
• Works with other Terminal Managers to schedule the Operations Labor Manager’s schedules.
• Develop and maintain working relationships with ILWU union officials.
• Participate in hiring, disciplinary actions, and terminations of Union members.
• Attend meetings with appropriate organizations in relation to the maritime industry.
• Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

• High School diploma or equivalent.
• 3-4 years of work experience in the transportation and maritime industry, especially marine terminal operations and supervisory principles, practices, and techniques. Work experience in union labor relations.
• Experience managing multiple operations at one time.
• Valid Driver’s License and valid TWIC Card.
• Highly organized and flexible.
• Detail-oriented and works with a high degree of accuracy.
• Detailed knowledge of email, scheduling, and Microsoft systems (Excel proficient).
• Knowledge of compliance under HAZMAT and OSHA Regulations.
• Knowledge of PCMSC, PCLCD, PCCCD, and PCWBFM.

Work environment :

• Required job duties are performed in a professional office environment.
• The position will be required to travel between terminals in Southern California but may require other regions.
• The noise level in the work environment is occasional.
• The ability to work in an environment that may be hazardous to persons unable to see and hear fast-moving equipment.

Salary Range: $135,000-160,000 per year

The posted compensation range is based on the applicable geographic market for the position and may vary depending on factors such as related experience and skill set. Final compensation will be determined based on these items and other relevant factors.
