Job summary

Del Mar College is seeking a TERM INSTRUCTOR in Aviation Maintenance to teach state‑approved courses in Airframe and Power Plant Applied Technology and to prepare laboratories according to schedule.

You will maintain curriculum aligned with FAA regulations, use varied teaching methods, and engage with industry partners. A strong background in aviation maintenance and an A&P certification are required to support student success.

Qualifications

  • Five or ten years of aviation maintenance experience as specified.

This is a CONTINUOUS recruitment for an applicant POOL to fill Student Assistant assignments on an as-needed basis. Departments or Divisions will refer to the POOL of applications on file to fill temporary assignments as the need arises. Position Summary Information

Teach state approved courses in the Airframe and Power Plant Applied Technology programs.

Teach assigned classes and laboratories according to the schedule.

Teach assigned courses in a variety of times and locations in response to institutional need.

Show students the actions necessary to perform a skill.

Climb and descend stairs in an aircraft on a weekly basis to instruct students.

Assemble, build, calibrate, measure, fix, grind, torque or mend for practical, hands‑on demonstrations.

Maintain a classroom environment that promotes teaching and learning.

Make continuous efforts to advance the quality of instruction.

Maintain and update curriculum to ensure alignment with FAA regulations and evolving industry and student needs.

Develop and use a variety of teaching methods and materials to assist students who have differing educational and experiential backgrounds in meeting the course outcomes.

Maintain relevant relationships with the aviation industry.

Maintain appropriate professional relationships with students, colleagues and the community.

Committee work and service to the college and community.

Required Job Knowledge, Skills, Abilities
  • Knowledge to train students to acceptable standards in all subject matter areas.
  • Ability to show students the actions necessary to perform a skill.
  • Knowledge of precise actions students are to perform and ability to describe the end result of these efforts.
  • Ability to climb and descend stairs in an aircraft to instruct students.
  • Ability to assemble, build, calibrate, measure, fix, grind, torque or mend for practical, hands‑on demonstrations.
  • Ability to plan course instruction based upon approved syllabus/ outline provided to insure course content and objectives are met.
  • Ability to utilize a variety of teaching styles and methods to accommodate various learning styles of students.
  • Ability to teach and communicate with students of varied multicultural backgrounds.
  • Knowledge of and commitment to teaching strategies and methods which enhance student success.
  • Knowledge of a learning college and/or knowledge of learning communities.
  • Knowledge utilizing instructional technologies, including computers, internet resources and other appropriate media in instruction.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Associate in Applied Science Degree in Aviation Maintenance or related field.
  • Airframe and Powerplant Mechanic Certification.
  • Five (5) years of work experience in the Aviation Maintenance field.
  • -OR-
  • Airframe and Powerplant Mechanic Certification.
  • Ten (10) years of work experience in the Aviation Maintenance field.
Preferred Qualifications
  • FAA Inspection Authorization.
  • Successful college teaching experience is preferred.
  • Experience teaching college level online courses and/or documented successful training in a college online learning management system (e.g. Blackboard, Canvas).

Job Duties
  • Maintain professional standards of competence in the discipline and teaching methodology through professional development/engagement activities. Participation in professional development activities. Program development and refinement activities.

  • Review, evaluate, and revise assessments of program and institutional student learning outcomes and program practices to bring about action plans devised to implement systemic improvement in programs and assure compliance with professional standards, state-mandated guidelines, and requirements of business/industry and higher education.

  • Participate cooperatively and effectively with his/her peers as part of the overall college community. Meet professional assignments in accordance with the College calendar.

  • Provide students with a written and accessible course syllabus that follows the Course Syllabus Guidelines and facilitates a clear understanding between student and instructor of the content, goals, requirements, expectations, evaluation methods and schedule of work. Review, evaluate, recommend, and effectively use student learning materials.

  • Hold scheduled, posted virtual or physical office hours of at least one (1) hour daily and be available for and encourage conferences with students so there is a clearer understanding of the students’ work and the possibility of improvement. Evaluate students to measure their progress toward achievement of stated course outcomes within the College grade and grade appeals procedures.

  • Participate in the self-evaluation process. Establish goals and objectives which may include personal and professional development plans in consultation with the department chair.

  • Assist in academic advising of declared majors. Assist with marketing programs and recruiting students.

  • Accept special assignments occasionally. Participate in scheduled institutional activities which include convocation and graduation ceremonies. Participate in department, divisional, and College meetings. Participate in College-related activities such as registration and selection of faculty. Participate in activities required to maintain program and College accreditation standards.

  • Participate in the College planning process by assisting in the formulation of goals and objectives and budget priorities.

  • Participate in business and/or community activities that promote the mission of the College.
