Job summary

California Water Service Group is seeking a Temporary Water System Maintenance Worker to support maintenance on drinking water infrastructure in Los Altos, CA. You will assist with leaks, meters, and service lines, and help in flushing, tools operation, and daily service truck duties.

The role requires basic math, strong communication, and a HS diploma with a CA driver's license. You will follow NPDES guidelines and uphold safety standards while contributing to a critical public utility team.

Qualifications

  • Able to communicate effectively with supervisor, co-workers and the public.
  • Ability to perform basic mathematical functions and read/interpret safety rules and manuals.
  • Must have HS diploma or equivalent, valid CA Class C Driver’s license, and be insurable by the Company.
  • Knowledge of MS Word and Outlook features is required.

Responsibilities

  • Under direction, excavate and expose service/main leaks; isolate damage and assist in repairing or replacing assets.
  • Assist in repairs and maintenance of meters, meter boxes, service lines, mains and wells.
  • Assist flushing and maintenance of mains; operate hand and power tools as needed.
  • Assist in setting, replacing, and/or removing 1 ½” to 2” meters.
  • Assist locating facilities; assist in valve operation.
  • Conduct water discharges per NPDES policy, monitor data, and complete paperwork.

Under the oversight of a Supervisor or Foreman, the Temporary Water System Maintenance Worker assists in performing essential maintenance operations on drinking water infrastructure facilities. This includes repairs and maintenance to water mains, service lines, streets/sidewalks, and fire hydrants; repair and replacement of meters and meter boxes. Employee will also assist in service shut off/turn on and provide customer notification of such activities; can perform the general cleanup of grounds and facilities including painting, repairing, and maintaining Company owned or operated facilities. This position is located in Los Altos, CA.

Essential Functions:
  • Under direction, excavate and expose service/main leaks; isolate damage and assist in repairing or replacing assets
  • Assist in repairs and maintenance activities of meters, meter boxes, service lines, mains and wells
  • Assist flushing and performing maintenance on all necessary functions of mains; operate various hand and power tools in the completion of these activities
  • Assist in setting, replacing, and/or removing 1 ½” to 2” size meters
  • Assist in locating facilities; assist in valve operation
  • Under direction conduct all water discharges with Company’s National Pollution Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) policy including, but not limited to, implementation of Best Management Practices (BMPs), monitoring and recording all required data, and completing necessary paperwork related to all discharge events
  • Prepare and operate service truck(s) daily, the loading of needed materials and equipment, remove and dispose of debris, clean equipment and truck as needed
Other Duties and Responsibilities:
  • May take distribution system water samples as part of the repairs and maintenance to mains, services and fire hydrants
  • Other duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications:
  • A WSMW must be able to effectively communicate with their supervisor, co-workers and the public
  • Have the ability to perform basic mathematic functions to calculate figures; and have the ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operation and maintenance instructions, procedure manuals, and ability to write routine reports and correspondence
  • Must possess a High School diploma or equivalent, a valid California Class C Driver’s license, and be insurable under the Company’s policy
  • A WSMW must have a working knowledge of basic features of word processing programs (e.g., Microsoft Word) and electronic mail processing programs (e.g., Microsoft Outlook)
  • Employee must be able to work with supervision and respond appropriately to direction, feedback, evaluation, coaching, counseling, and/or discipline
Salary Range:
  • Step 1 - $30.69
  • Step 2 - $31.99 (6 months)
  • Step 3 - $33.17 (12 months)
  • Step 4 - $35.05 (18 months)
