This position will be from time of hire to the end of the live racing season on September 28, 2024. A few days after the last race day may be required. Applicants may have the opportunity for a 6-7 month position starting in April, 2025.
The racing steward position works 80 or more hours every two weeks during the live racing season.
Salary is $46.20 - $65.78/hour with 40 hours per week anticipated.
Proof of current steward accreditation is required.
Racing days are Friday-Monday. Split shifts, evening, weekend, and holiday hours are required. Typical hours would be 4 hours Thursday and 9 hours/day Friday – Monday. Specific hours determined in part by the race schedule.
Job Duties
Job duties include, but are not limited to:
- Serves as a member of the Board of Stewards to review alleged violations.
- Issues rulings after hearing testimony and may levy fines/suspensions and/or make recommendations to the Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission/HISA for further action.
- Observes the running of live races/replays on video tape and determines if all starting gates opened simultaneously, if there was no interference of a horse, and if jockeys/horses put forth their best effort.
- May disqualify a horse and change the order of finish if a foul was committed; declares the race official.
- Monitors the pattern of wagering and may cancel wagering if irregularities are discovered.
- If requested, works with veterinarians to ensure that required body fluid samples are being taken.
- Receives veterinarian laboratory reports from official racing chemist or HISA on positives, non-positives, and suspicious results, and follows up on outstanding tests.
- Notifies trainers on positive tests and arranges and presides over a hearing.
