Overview
In pursuit of service excellence, the Temporary Water Safety Instructor leads youth and adult learn to swim classes at various recreational pools throughout the City of Alexandria. This position is vital to enhancing the overall safety and well-being of residents in our community. The City's aquatic facilities provide a growing mix of learn to swim programs to diverse user groups representing all areas of the community. In this role, you will have the opportunity to ensure that goals are met to provide a safe, fun, structured and engaging atmosphere for all our customers.
What You Should Bring
Each member of our team is accountable for the outstanding delivery of services to the community. You should possess knowledge of teaching swim lessons. You will work to meet the needs of our community. Enjoyment working with people, a love of the water, and excellent communication skills are needed to be successful in this position. You will have the support of and work under the direction of a Recreation Coordinator and/or Recreation Manager II. The hours will be determined by customer needs, and may include mornings, afternoons, evenings, and weekends.

The Department of Recreation, Parks and Cultural Activities received national accreditation from the Commission for Accreditation of Park and Recreation Agencies (CAPRA). National accreditation requires park and recreation agencies to meet 155 standards representing elements of effective and efficient park and recreation operations.
Minimum Requirements
High School Diploma or GED; one year of experience as a Recreation Leader II, or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. First Aid training, valid driver's license issued by state of residence. Small Pool Manager: possession of a valid Red Cross or comparable Senior Life Saving and Swimming Pool Operator's Certificate. Assistant Pool Manager: (Large Pool) same as for a Small Pool Manager, plus two years swimming pool experience, and the ability to perform routine maintenance/repair work on pool equipment. Possession of Red Cross Water Safety Instructor certification or equivalent. This position requires successful completion of a criminal records background check prior to employment.
