Job summary

County of Riverside’s Department of Flood Control is hiring multiple Maintenance and Construction Worker (MCW) positions in Riverside. Under supervision, perform field maintenance or construction tasks using hand and power tools, trucks and other equipment.

Duties include road and flood control construction, fence building, weed abatement, signing, trimming, and operating light motorized equipment. Requires one year of related experience and a valid California Driver's License.

Qualifications

  • One year of construction or field maintenance work.
  • Ability to operate light trucks and related equipment.
  • Possession of a valid California Class C driver's license.

Job description

The Department of Flood Control is seeking multiple Maintenance and Construction Worker (MCW) positions located in Riverside.

Under general supervision, performs a variety of field maintenance or construction work; operates hand tools, power tools, trucks, and/or other motorized equipment in the performance of maintenance or construction projects; and performs other related duties as required.

The Maintenance and Construction Worker is a first working level classification and reports to an appropriate supervisory or manager level position. Incumbents are required to perform a variety of semi-skilled tasks, which often includes the operation of the less complex and smaller motorized equipment (e.g., two-axle or three-axle trucks, water spray trucks, loaders, mowers, chippers, and compressors). Functions in which this work is performed include road and flood control construction and maintenance, refuse disposal site operations, maintenance, recycling, excavations, fence building, weed abatement, signing, rodent control, and tree trimming.

Schedule: Monday - Thursday 6:00AM to 4:30PM

The Department of Flood Control was created July 7, 1945 by an Act of the California State Legislature. The District (2700 sq. mi.) is located in the western portion of Riverside County (7200 sq. mi.). It extends easterly far enough to include the cities of Palm Springs, Desert Hot Springs, and a portion of Cathedral City. The District is governed by a Board of Supervisors comprised of the same individuals as the Riverside County Board of Supervisors.

  • Construct and maintain roads, fencing, flood control channel walls and levees, and culverts.
  • Perform construction, maintenance and recycling work at refuse disposal sites; spray and cut weeds; patch holes in black top roads; clear roads, channels, and other facilities of storm debris and damage.
  • Install signs; chop and clear brush; mix and pour concrete; erect traffic and street signs.
  • Use a variety of hand and power tools; operate dump trucks to load, haul and deliver a variety of debris and materials; operate water spray trucks, loaders, mowers and other light motorized equipment.
Experience:

One year of performing construction work or field maintenance work (e.g., roads, flood control facilities, refuse sites, recycling facilities, public works projects or closely related work) which required operation of light trucks and related construction equipment.

Knowledge of:

The operation and maintenance of trucks and light motorized equipment; equipment and traffic safety procedures; the tools and materials commonly used in field maintenance, recycling, or construction work.

Ability to:

Safely operate trucks and light motorized equipment; perform a variety of semi-skilled maintenance or construction tasks; operate power saws, chippers, and a variety of hand tools; follow oral and written instructions.

Other Requirements:

Possession of a valid Class C California Driver's License at the time of application as the incumbent will be driving a county vehicle daily throughout Riverside County.

Physical Requirements:

The majority of this position entails working outdoors in inclement weather conditions (rain, sleet, wind, and summer temperatures exceeding 115 degrees Fahrenheit). The role requires prolonged physical exertion, including standing, lifting, carrying, and removing debris, appliances, waste, and other bulky items; as well as reaching, bending, pushing, pulling, and climbing, with or without reasonable accommodations.
