Job summary

The Temporary Lighting Supervisor at the Boston Conservatory at Berklee (BCB) serves as Lighting Supervisor for the off-campus opera, Rake’s Progress, at the Wimberly Theatre in April 2027, and handles all lighting and electrical requirements.

Reporting to the Assistant Director of Production, you will supervise staff and collaborate with the lighting designer to meet deadlines, budgets, and safety standards. Much work may be remote with on-site presence required late March–mid April 2027.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Theater or similar field, or equivalent work experience.
• At least three years of experience as a professional Lighting Supervisor or Master Electrician.
• Experience working with college students in an advisory, supervisory capacity preferred.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills.

Responsibilities

• Ensure alignment of lighting needs with artistic and institutional ambitions and within budget, and schedule.
• Collaborate closely with lighting designer, visiting artists, and division deans, chairs and faculty for all production and event needs.
• Work alongside the Temporary Production Electrician, and ensure knowledge of lighting plans, schedule, and expectations.
• Attend hang, focus, tech, strike, and ensure coverage for lighting needs and notes as they arise.
• Track rehearsal report notes and reply as needed to lighting questions/concerns.
• Confirm lighting pre-programming time for Designer as needed.

Job description

Job Description: The Temporary Lighting Supervisor at the Boston Conservatory at Berklee (BCB) serves as Lighting Supervisor for the assigned off-campus opera, Rake’s Progress, held at the Wimberly Theatre in April 2027, and is responsible for executing all lighting and electrical requirements.

The Lighting Supervisor coordinates and supervises all lighting work calls, hangs, focuses and strikes, and collaborates closely with the lighting designer to implement designs and special effects, and ensure all deadlines are met.

As part of the Performance Services department, the Lighting Supervisor reports to the Assistant Director of Production and works closely with the Technical Director, Stage Manager, and the full department.

The Lighting Supervisor supervises the staff production electrician, as well as casual hourly and student staff.

This is a temporary, hourly position that is anticipated to work through May 3, 2027.

Communication will begin in the fall, while the design is being developed.

Much of this position’s expected work may be done remotely, with on-site presence beginning end of March 2027 - mid April as needed.

RAKE’S PROGRESS TENTATIVE SCHEDULE:

• Lighting Hang: March 29, 2027
• Lighting Focus: April 5, 2027
• Tech: Saturday, April 10 and Sunday, April 11, 2027 from 10am - 9pm
• All Department Notes and Dress Rehearsals in the evenings of: April 12, 13, 14, 2027
• Performances: April 15 @ 7:30pm, April 16 @ 7:30pm, April 17 @ 7:30pm, April 18 @ 1:00pm
• Strike to follow final performance.
• Lighting rental pick up on Tuesday, April 20, 2027

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS / PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Ensure alignment of lighting needs with artistic and institutional ambitions and within budget, and schedule.
• Collaborate closely with lighting designer, visiting artists, and division deans, chairs and faculty for all production and event needs.
• Work alongside the Temporary Production Electrician, and ensure knowledge of lighting plans, schedule, and expectations
• Confirm lighting rental needs in a timely manner for delivery and return, and communicate with appropriate parties for payment
• Attend hang, focus, tech, strike, and ensure coverage for lighting needs and notes as they arise.
• Track rehearsal report notes and reply as needed to lighting questions/concerns.
• Confirm lighting pre-programming time for Designer as needed
• Communicate and coordinate with venue staff for any adjustments and potential repairs needed
• Ensure safety standards are upheld to the highest standards in the space
• Attend production meetings and participate in group meetings pertaining to lighting as needed.

MINIMUM JOB QUALIFICATIONS:

• Bachelor’s degree in Theater or similar field, or equivalent work experience
• At least three years of experience as a professional Lighting Supervisor or Master Electrician required
• Experience working with college students in an advisory, supervisory, and/or educational capacity preferred
• Excellent written and oral communication skills

KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED:

• Familiarity with EPA, USITT and OSHA workplace standards
• Familiarity with Boston Fire Department codes
• Familiarity with an ETC console and VectorWorks
• Experience with basic lighting design strongly preferred

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Supervises Production Electrician and lighting crew

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

• Indoor environments, some with low light: stages, backstage areas, dressing rooms, costume shop, storage spaces, prop and scenery storage, office spaces, workshop, control booth
• Seated and standing positions
• Stairs and ladders

SPECIAL WORKING CONDITIONS, PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS, ETC:

• Ability to regularly lift objects of up to 40 lbs, and climb ladders up to a height of 24 feet required
• Nights and weekend work essential

Hiring Range: $24.00-$35.00/hr; salary dependent on relevant experience and education.
