Job summary

Vancouver Public Schools is seeking two Temporary Groundskeepers to maintain district grounds in Vancouver, WA. This 8-hour day, 12-month position is non-exempt and requires a WA driver’s license. On-the-job duties include mowing, landscaping, paving, and related maintenance using various tools and equipment.

These temporary roles run through the 2025-26 school year. CDL endorsement within 12 months is required, with potential for extension based on performance and needs.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Demonstrated successful grounds keeping experience within the last ten years.
  • Valid Washington State Driver’s license.
  • Able to lift up to 50 pounds and work outdoors in all weather.
  • Class A CDL endorsement within 12 months of hire.

Responsibilities

  • Carry out maintenance of school district grounds including mowing, landscaping, fencing, paving, and general upkeep.
  • Operate various power tools and equipment used in grounds work.
  • Perform daily vehicle maintenance and keep vehicles clean for safety and appearance.
  • Plant and irrigate lawns, maintain shrubs and beds, and manage debris on grounds.
  • Inspect grounds for safety hazards and report/correct as needed.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Demonstrated successful grounds keeping experience as defined in the essential functions within the last ten (10) years.
  • Valid Washington State Driver’s license.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

  • Ability to work effectively as a team member and team leader as needed.
  • Ability to work with frequent interruptions.
  • Ability to meet tight time constraints and deadlines including but not limited to varying working hours when necessary.
  • Regular attendance to carry out the duties and responsibilities of the position to achieve program requirements, goals, and outcomes.
  • Ability to lift supplies and equipment up to 1/3 of yourbody weight up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to communicate with a variety of people, in person, electronically, in writing, and over the phone or by radio.
  • Ability to walk about on various types of terrain (e.g., grass, dirt, pavement) and work in high places.
  • Ability to work outdoors in all types of weather.
  • Ability to safely operate various types of trucks, landscaping equipment, and hand tools related to grounds work.
  • Ability to obtain job related certifications within 12 months as directed.
  • Class 'A' CDL endorsement within 12 months of hire.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Treat co-workers, supervisors, students, parents and others with dignity and respect at all times.
  • Serve as a positive role model for students, and practices the behaviors that are expected of our students.
  • Work in a flexible and cooperative manner.
  • Carry out all maintenance associated with school district grounds. Types of work include but are not limited to:mowing, landscaping, fencing, paving, concrete work, playground equipment installation and maintenance, garbage collection and hauling, and grounds maintenance.
  • Operate various types of power tools and equipment used to do grounds maintenance work.
  • Perform daily maintenance on vehicles; request repairs as needed using the Transportation Department computerized work order system.Clean vehicles inside and out as needed for safety and appearance.
  • Prepare soil, plant, and irrigate new lawns; seed, fertilize, aerate, edge, mow, and maintain lawns.When licensed, spray pesticides using safe procedures.
  • Plant and maintain shrub and flower beds; repair damage, replacing plants as necessary.
  • Clean debris from grounds (especially walkways), including leaves, trash, and snow.
  • In the course of work, inspect school district grounds for safety hazards; report and/or correct as needed.
  • Perform other tasks and assume other responsibilities as assigned by supervisor.

Benefits/Compensation:

Salary range: New employees will start at the minimum hourly rate in the salary range. However, employees who have verified prior years of service in a similar occupational status from other Washington School Districts or Education School Districts, may receive experience credit towards salary placement. Salary schedules can be accessedhere .
