Purpose of Job:
The Grossing Laboratory Technician performs laboratory analyses and tests. Prepares samples, sets up instruments, runs tests and reads, interprets and releases results.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Accurately gross an average of 12 cases (14 Containers) per hour. 91 cases (109 containers) per 7.6 hour shift. Load and operate the Sakura V.I.P. machines when needed.
- Gross submitted tissues per SOP and related protocols with high level of quality.
- Properly identify, orient, ink, and trim submitted tissues.
- Produce accurate and legible grossing notes with code description that provide the Pathologist with a clear understanding of the sections taken.
- Communicate with and respond to Pathologists, transcription, and LabC email communications.
- Identify problem and special handling cases.
- Gross tissue for specific re-gross requests when requested in a timely manner.
- Calibrate and run Quality Control on the machines and assist with daily, weekly and monthly maintenance of the machines.
- Exercise judgment in evaluating and reporting results.
- Report any technical/QC problems to their lead tech or supervisor.
- Cross-train and develop knowledge of multiple specialties within department/lab.
- Read, understand and follow applicable SOPs, including safety and quality procedures. Maintain a clean and organized work area. Restock supplies as needed.
- Participate in improving lab efficiency, quality, and cooperation.
- Consult with senior peers on non-complex tasks to learn through experience.
- Apply job skills and lab policies and procedures to complete various tasks.
- May participate in enterprise initiatives, special projects, and other duties as assigned.
Education/Experience:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Science, Biology or other Life Sciences.
- Coursework in anatomy/physiology required.
Required Skills and Abilities:
- Laboratory skills, with experience setting up, running, and reading lab tests and operating lab instruments preferred but not required.
- Knowledge of lab equipment and procedures.
- Knowledge of medical and laboratory terminology and Microbiology procedures and equipment helpful.
- General science background.
- Attention to detail.
- Organized with ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Communication skills, both verbal and written.
- Positive, can-do attitude.
- Supervisory skills, if a lead position.
- Personal computer skills, including strong typing ability and proficient use of Microsoft Office.
Physical Demands:
- Extensive sitting, phone, and computer use.
- Capable of standing continuously for up to 2 hours.
- Extend and reach with hands and arms and use hands and fingers.
- Occasionally required to bend, kneel, stoop, or crouch.
- May be required to lift, move, and carry up to 20 lbs.
- Specific vision abilities include close vision, color vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
- Hearing ability to communicate effectively via telephone and in person.
- Fluency in English.
- Extended hours may be needed.
Work Environment:
- Laboratory environment with potential biohazards.
- Work under close to moderate supervision with limited independent judgment.
- General instructions on routine work, detailed instructions on new assignments.
- Potential exposure to agents causing zoonotic diseases and hazardous chemicals as per standards.
