Job description

TEMPORARY AIDE - Animal Care (Division of Racing Events)

Join to apply for the TEMPORARY AIDE - Animal Care (Division of Racing Events) role at State of Colorado.

This position is located in the Division of Racing at Arapahoe Park and off-track facility at 26000 E. Quincy Ave, Aurora, CO. The racing season generally runs from June to October 2025 and involves ensuring the safety of racing animals, implementing laboratory testing, and assisting in developing rules and regulations related to medication and animal welfare.

Job Responsibilities
  • Collection and packaging of urine samples from horses, following chain of custody procedures.
  • Observing horse behavior to determine the best method for sample collection safely and efficiently.
  • Managing the flow of horses through the test barn, including deciding when to take samples based on behavior and other factors.
  • Educating and guiding test barn attendees on procedures and rules.
  • Witnessing administration of medications like Furosemide by licensed veterinarians and collecting used syringes.
  • Updating horse identification and health records across databases and interviews to verify eligibility and entry status.
  • Maintaining testing records and preparing necessary documentation.
  • Cleaning and maintaining the test barn area and setting up equipment for testing.
  • Participating in daily racing staff meetings and assisting veterinarians and horsemen as needed.
Minimum Qualifications

Two years of customer service or office support experience demonstrating decision-making and multitasking skills, or no experience required. Candidates may submit relevant transcripts or certifications, with personal identifiers redacted.

Additional Requirements
  • In-state travel as needed.
  • Valid Colorado driver’s license.
  • Willingness to work nights, weekends, holidays, and be on-call for emergencies.
  • Ability to lift objects up to 50 pounds.
Preferred Skills
  • Knowledge of veterinary ethics, regulations, and policies.
  • Strong decision-making, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and Google Suite.
  • Animal affinity and prudent decision-making regarding animal welfare.
