Job summary

Nova Southwestern University in Florida is seeking a temporary Sea Turtle Monitoring Assistant to support the Broward County Sea Turtle Conservation program under FWC guidelines. This non-exempt position is contingent on grant funding.

Duties include nightly nest surveys, locating and relocating nests, data collection, and reporting. Candidates must be already hired into the BCSTCP; evening, night, and weekend work is required; a High School Diploma or equivalent is required.

Qualifications

• Knowledge of MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) and data entry.
• Ability to learn software relevant to the research program.
• Safely operate an all-terrain vehicle to patrol beach sites.
• Ability to work evenings, nights, and weekends.
• Work independently and as part of a team.
• Communicate with staff, volunteers, and public at all times.

Responsibilities

• Locate, identify and mark all marine turtle nest sites in compliance with guidelines.
• Locate, identify and document false crawls from nesting activity.
• Relocate imperiled nests.
• Monitor nesting activity in relation to beach projects.

Primary Purpose:

To perform overnight monitoring surveys and relocation of sea turtle nests for Seg III Dune Restoration construction project in compliance with Marine Turtle Permit and Guidelines as set forth by FWC under the supervision of an FWC permitted Broward County Sea Turtle Conservation program administrator, Principle Investigator, or Project Manager. You must already be a BCSTCP Employee for your application to be accepted

Temporary employment is of limited duration, and under the terms of NSU's benefits plan and policies, not eligible for company benefits.

Essential Job Functions:

Job duties may include some or all of the following functions listed below based on level of experience with Broward County Sea Turtle Conservation Program and/or endangered species

• 2. Locate, identify and mark all marine turtle nest sites laid each night in compliance with the FWC Marine Turtle Guidelines and Marine Turtle Permit under the supervision of an FWC permitted program administrator, Principle Investigator, or Project Manager
• 3. Locate, identify and document all false crawls from previous night nesting activity
• 4. Relocate imperiled nests
• 5. Monitor for sea turtle nesting activity in relation to beach re-nourishment projects on Broward County beaches
• 6. Collect and enter data related to all aspects of the nesting beach activities and monitoring with an emphasis on accuracy, quality, and efficiency

Job Requirements:

Required Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:

• 1. Knowledge of MS Office, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook; database and data entry skills
• 2. Ability to utilize or learn to utilize software relevant to the research program, new research methods, and work routines quickly
• 3. Safely operate an all-terrain vehicle to patrol Broward County beach sites
• 4. Ability to work evenings, nights, and weekends
• 5. Must be able to work independently and as part of a team
• 6. Be able to communicate and maintain working relationships with all contracted staff, volunteers, County and Federal employees, and the general public at all times

Required Certifications/Licensures:Must be able to complete all required training modules for each component of beach monitoring activities
