Department Information

The Institute for Bioengineering and Bioscience's mission (IBB, https://bioresearch.gatech.edu/) is to build a community across Georgia Tech and its partner institutions that catalyzes, cultivates, and deploys interdisciplinary research and education in bioengineering and biosciences for economic and societal benefit. This position is part of IBB's Core Facilities (https://bioresearch.gatech.edu/core-facilities/overview).

The position will support daily operations in the Systems Mass Spectrometry - Proteomics Core Facility, delivering high-quality proteomic services to internal and external research teams. Primary duties include biological sample preparation, high-performance liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) calibration and upkeep, routine data acquisition, and general laboratory maintenance.

Responsibilities
  • Job Duty 1 - Setup, operate and maintain instruments and other equipment used in performing lab tests and experiments.
  • Job Duty 2 - Order supplies and materials as required; maintain records.
  • Job Duty 3 - Setup laboratory media/equipment for demonstrations.
  • Job Duty 4 - May clean instruments, glassware and other lab equipment.
  • Job Duty 5 - Prepare and process laboratory samples for use in assigned tests.
  • Job Duty 6 - Perform other duties as assigned
Required Qualifications
Educational Requirements

High school diploma, GED Certificate or Vocational School Diploma

Required Experience

Up to two years of job related experience

Preferred Qualifications
  • Prior experience working in a mass spectrometry or proteomics core facility.
  • Familiarity with liquid chromatography systems (nanoLC / microLC) and mass spectrometers (e.g., Thermo Fisher Orbitrap, Bruker timsTOF).
  • Basic familiarity with proteomics data processing software (e.g., MaxQuant, Spectronaut, Proteome Discoverer, Skyline).

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
Sample Preparation & Processing
  • Perform standard and complex proteomics sample preparation workflows, including protein extraction, quantification (BCA/Bradford), reduction/alkylation, and enzymatic digestion (e.g., trypsinization).
  • Execute sample cleanup and desalting procedures (e.g., C18 StageTips, solid-phase extraction).
  • Assist with isotopic or isobaric labeling protocols (e.g., TMT, SILAC) and sample fractionation techniques as required.
Instrument Operation & Upkeep
  • Perform routine calibration, tuning, mass accuracy checks, and quality control (QC) runs on LC-MS/MS systems.
  • Monitor instrument performance and liaise with service engineers for routine maintenance or repair visits.
Data Acquisition & Quality Control
  • Set up and run standard data acquisition methods (e.g., DDA, DIA, PRM/MRM).
  • Monitor LC-MS run quality and perform initial data checks using standard bioinformatics software.
  • Document protocols, experimental logs, and instrument parameters accurately.
General Lab Operations & Inventory
  • Maintain inventory of reagents, columns, solvents, and lab supplies; place purchase orders as needed.
