Job description

You will be the first face members see and the person they trust with their money.

University of Nebraska Federal Credit Union is hiring a full-time Teller in Lincoln. We are member-owned, not shareholder-owned, which means the person at your window is not a customer. They are owners, and most of them are students, faculty, staff, and families connected to the University of Nebraska. You will see the same faces week after week, and you will get to know them.

What your day looks like

About a third of your time is transactions: deposits, withdrawals, loan payments, and transfers, processed accurately and without making the member wait. The rest is everything that makes a credit union feel different from a bank.

  • Greet every member by name when you can, and like you mean it when you can't yet. A smile and a thank-you are part of the job, not extras.
  • Verify who you are talking to and follow security procedures. Fraud prevention starts at the teller line, and members count on you to protect them.
  • Balance your cash drawer at the end of every day. The goal is 100 percent, every day, and your teammates will help you get there.
  • Handle cash and negotiable instruments with care. Precision matters more than speed, and speed comes with practice.
  • Answer member questions and solve the small problems on the spot. When something is bigger than the teller line, you will know who to hand it to and how.
  • Notice when a member could be better served. If someone is paying a high rate elsewhere or does not know we offer something, say so. That is not sales pressure, it is looking out for an owner.
  • Follow the compliance and regulatory rules that keep a financial institution safe. We will teach you these; you bring the attention to detail.
  • Pitch in on the clerical work that keeps a branch running, and help your fellow tellers close out the day as a team.
Who does well here

The tellers who thrive at NUFCU tend to share a few things, and none of them are a finance degree.

  • You like people, even when they're having a bad day. You can stay warm and steady when a member is frustrated, and you know how to de-escalate without taking it personally.
  • You are careful with details. Names, account numbers, and dollar amounts have to be right, and you are the kind of person who double-checks.
  • You keep things confidential. Members tell tellers a lot. You treat that as a trust, not a conversation starter.
  • You show up. Reliability is a performance measure in this role, and your teammates depend on it.
  • You want to learn. Many of our people started at the teller line and moved into lending, member services, operations, and management. We promote from within and we mean it.

If you have worked retail, food service, hospitality, or any job where you handled money and dealt with the public, you already have most of what this role needs.

What you need to bring
  • High school diploma or GED
  • One month to one year of similar or related experience (cash handling, customer service, retail, or office work)
  • Comfort with a ten-key calculator and a computer keyboard
  • Accuracy with numbers and names
  • Tact and discretion in conversations that involve confidential financial information
  • A professional, businesslike presence in an office setting
  • Ability to pass a background check and meet the bonding requirements of a financial institution

No credit union or banking experience required. We train the technical parts. We cannot train someone to care about the person in front of them, so that is what we hire for.

Why Join NUFCU?
  • Opportunity to contribute to a trusted member-focused financial institution.
  • Professional growth in a supportive, team-oriented culture.
  • Competitive compensation and benefits package.
  • A collaborative, mission-driven workplace where people come first.
