Job summary

Sandia National Laboratories in Livermore, CA, is seeking a Telemetry Embedded Systems Designer to drive architectures and firmware for flight telemetry products. You will engage across hardware, firmware, integration, and verification, shaping concepts into robust, flight-ready systems.

The role emphasizes hands-on development with VHDL on FPGA-based embedded systems, data capture from diverse sensors, and comprehensive verification plans. Onsite work is required in Livermore.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in a relevant discipline or equivalent experience.
• Ability to obtain and maintain U.S. DOE Q-Level Security Clearance.
• Graduate degree in Electrical/Computer Engineering is a plus.
• Experience with analog and digital circuit design and analysis is desirable.
• Hands-on testing with test equipment (oscilloscopes, analyzers, generators) is advantageous.
• Proficiency with design and analysis tools (Matlab, LabVIEW) and HDL simulations (ModelSim).
• Experience with VHDL and embedded systems; familiarity with FPGA technologies.
• Strong communication and teamwork skills.

Responsibilities

• Shape high-level digital architectures for next-gen Telemetry systems.
• Translate system needs into clear firmware requirements and tests.
• Design embedded firmware (VHDL) for flight hardware.
• Work with data from ICs and sensors using SPI, I2C, USB, and 8b/10b.
• Deliver data via USB, UART, NRZL, and biphase.
• Develop verification strategies and firmware test plans.
• Build firmware simulations and lab test runs.
• Test, troubleshoot, and debug electronics in the lab.
• Develop system-level understanding of collected data and anomalies.
• Document designs and results for the team.
