Job summary

CaroMont Health in Gastonia, NC is seeking a Telecommunications Engineer to design, test, and support communications systems. You will work with network engineers on telecommunication impact to network infrastructure, prepare equipment specs, and coordinate vendor bids for lease or purchase.

The role requires collaboration with management and technicians. Ideal candidates have telecom design experience, Cisco switching expertise, VPN/TCP/IP knowledge, and leadership abilities.

Qualifications

• Associate’s degree or seven years’ telecom experience.
• Experience with Cisco Catalyst routers and switches.
• Understanding of VPN, firewall, TCP/IP; strong switching/routing knowledge.
• Ability to lead others; on-call/weekend availability.
• Experience with Avaya/Nortel phone system integrations.
• Ability to read blueprints and use Visio.

Job Summary:

Research, develops, designs, and tests communications systems, networks and equipment. Performs engineering studies to obtain data on new equipment and systems developments in communications field and adaptability of equipment to existing system. Works with analysts to conduct studies on communications systems and equipment, such as present and projected volume of communications, effectiveness and adequacy of system, and estimated equipment costs. Includes supervisory and paraprofessional positions: Analyzes reports, records, and recommendations to determine whether equipment should be repaired or replaced, additional equipment installed, or newly developed equipment acquired, considering such factors as predicted volume of communications traffic, acquisition and installation costs, and estimated improvement in efficiency and effectiveness of operations, and changes in operational procedures resulting from new system installation. Prepares recommendations for acquisition of newly developed, additional, or replacement equipment based on analyses for action by the analyst and management. Works with Network engineers to advise on telecommunication impact to network infrastructure. Has an understanding of network design and methods. Prepares equipment specifications and floor plans for installation in offices or departments. Works with management on contacting vendors to arrange for bids for lease or purchase of equipment. Coordinates equipment installation and maintenance activities with operations to avoid disruptions in communications and ensure efficiency of operations. Performs a variety of tasks such as leading and directing technicians as the senior technician in the absence of the Manager as well as doing day to day technician work such as working on the Avaya phone system and completing repair and service requests when necessary. A wide degree of creativity and latitude is expected. Reports to Telecommunications Manager.

Qualifications:

Must have associate’s degree or equivalent work experience of at least seven years in telecommunications or related field. Must possess experience with Cisco catalyst, router and switches as well as understand what a VPN tunnel, a firewall, TCP/IP are and a working knowledge of switching and routing. Must be familiar with a variety of telecommunication system concepts, practices and procedure. Relies on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish tasks and goals with a degree of creativity and latitude. Must have the ability to lead others when necessary. Possess knowledge of telephone maintenance procedures, skill in networking, trunking and telecommunications data transmissions. Must have experience in design and development of Telecommunication systems as they relate to the Avaya/Nortel telephone system integrations. Have knowledge of how to read blueprints and use Visio or similar applications. Be available for on call/weekend work. The following certifications are desirable; Avaya/Nortel certifications, Cisco networking certifications, Rauland-Borg Nurse call Technician Certification, Spectra link Installer/Maintainer Certification.
