Job summary

CobbFendley in Austin is seeking an experienced SUE Technician to join our team. You will provide CAD support for subsurface utility engineering projects, create plan & profile drawings, interpret survey data, and collaborate with Project Managers and Designers.

You’ll work with MicroStation, InRoads, AutoCAD Civil 3D, and GIS data, ensuring QA/QC, safety, and client standards. This is a full‑time hybrid role with growth opportunities and a commitment to community.

Qualifications

  • Proficient in CAD for surveying and civil projects.
  • Solid experience with survey data interpretation and plan/profile drawings.
  • Knowledge of QA/QC procedures and safety standards.

Responsibilities

  • Work independently to support Project Managers, Project Engineers and Designers with technical design tasks for various projects.
  • Utilize engineering and drafting software to generate plan/profile drawings from survey files and record drawings.
  • Complete redline markups and incorporate review comments with minimal supervision.
  • Prepare CAD drawings, cost estimates, bills of materials, reports for construction and maintenance projects.
  • Interpret survey notes, utility records, and civil plans to create accurate base drawings.
  • Perform standard calculations including elevations, grades, and material quantities.
  • Support collection of field data or utility record information as required.
  • Apply and follow QA/QC procedures consistently.
  • Identify potential errors and correct them proactively.
  • Maintain compliance with company standards and safety requirements.
  • Collaborate with supervisor and engineers to complete assignments and serve as a resource on drafting practices.
  • Develop skills in interpreting survey data and engineering plans.
  • Work with internal clients to solve issues and prepare layouts according to client standards.
  • Provide CAD support for Subsurface Utility Engineering projects and related software.

CobbFendley is seeking an experienced SUE Technician in our Austin office.

Responsibilities

1. Plan Production

  • Work independently to support Project Managers, Project Engineers and Designers with technical design tasks for various projects.
  • Utilize engineering and drafting software to complete assignments, such as generating plan and profile drawings to include cross‑sections, underground utilities, etc. from survey files and/or record drawings.
  • Complete redline markups and accurately incorporates review comments with minimal supervision.
  • Prepare intermediate manual or computer‑aided design drawings, cost estimates, bills of materials, plus required documents and reports for construction and maintenance projects.
  • Interpret survey notes, utility records, and civil plans to create accurate base drawings.
  • Perform standard calculations, including elevations, grades, utility dimensions, and material quantities.
  • Support collection of field data or utility record information when required.

2. Compliance + Quality

  • Apply and follow QA/QC procedures consistently.
  • Identify potential errors or inconsistencies and correct them proactively.
  • Maintain compliance with company standards and safety requirements.

3. Communication + Collaboration

  • Work with supervisor, project manager, mentors, and various internal personnel to complete assignments within discipline and other disciplines.
  • Serve as a resource to the design staff on matters concerning drafting practices and procedures.

4. Training, Learning + Advancement

  • Develop skills in interpreting survey data, utility records, and engineering plans.

5. Client + Internal Satisfaction

  • Work with internal clients daily, problem solve minor issues and escalate concerns when needed.
  • Apply the client's standards, guidelines, specifications, practices, and procedures and/or appropriate industry standards in preparing layouts.

6. Technical

  • Provide CAD support for Subsurface Utility Engineering projects, as workload dictates.
  • An understanding of civil engineering and utility symbols and terminology with respect to preparation of plan & profile drawings for utility systems located within public rights‑of‑way.
  • A functional knowledge of MicroStation, InRoads, AutoCAD Civil 3D and other applicable software to the field is required.
  • Interpret both utility records and civil engineering plans and profiles; preparing base drawings from survey data and notes; and be willing to learn new ways to input 2D and 3D utility data into exhibits. Create plans and profile drawings for utility facilities such as electric, gas, telecommunications systems, sewer, or water. Perform data entry, update, and maintenance functions for a Geographic Information System (GIS) database is desirable.
  • Work with rough sketches, drawings, specifications, and other engineering data received from Client or Project Manager for use in the development of final construction drawings.
  • Must be able to understand and work directly with survey notes and utility record drawings.
  • Must be able to plot plan & profile drawings to include cross‑sections, spot elevations, buildings, walls, fences, roadways, rights‑of‑way, underground utilities, tunnels, overhead power lines, and other structures noted in the survey notes or on the utility record drawings.
  • May include collecting field or other utility record data required for completion of construction drawings when necessary.
  • Calculate or determine project utility dimensioning, profile grades, route elevations, underground utility line elevations, underground utility line sizes, and quantities of materials.

Physical & Cognitive Requirements
  • Most work is performed in a professional office environment. Some trips to client offices and outdoor environments for observations will be required.
  • Seated and Standing Position. Extended periods of sitting and standing in an upright position at a workstation.
  • Mobility. Movement within the office and job sites, including navigating between floors, workstations, and outdoor environments with potential for uneven surfaces.

  • Cognitive Requirements. Selective attention, oral comprehension, oral expression, speech recognition, speech clarity, written comprehension, written expression, problem sensitivity, deductive reasoning, inductive reasoning, number facility, information ordering, category flexibility, flexibility of closure, fluency of ideas, and originality.
  • Office Conditions. Includes extensive use of electronic devices such as computers, printers, copiers, scanners, plotters, and telephones.
  • Outdoor Conditions. Includes walking and climbing on uneven surfaces, confined spaces, and exposure to extreme weather conditions (heat and freezing temperatures). Potential exposure to high noise levels and various allergens, including poison ivy, sumac, dust, pollen, and cedar. Potential exposure to wildlife hazards such as animals, insects, and plants.
  • Safety and Equipment Use. Regular use of personal protective equipment (PPE) is required, along with use of hand and power tools.
  • Driving and Vehicle Use. May involve driving large pick‑up trucks with attached trailers, potentially operating watercraft, and for extended periods of time.
Expected Work Hours
  • This is a full‑time position, generally 40 hours per week, however, hours may fluctuate depending on department needs including the use of overtime.
  • CobbFendley’s standard operating hours are Monday through Friday, 7:30 AM to 4:30 PM CST. Generally, employees receive a 1‑hour unpaid lunch break free of duty. Please note, operating hours and lunch hours may differ based on project workload, primarily for field staff.
Work Location Flexibility
  • This position is eligible for a hybrid schedule once the training period is complete as established by the department.
