Position Summary

SUE Field Technician – Austin office

Responsibilities

Ultimately, the Field Technician is responsible for the success of field operations to support project completion.

  1. General – perform routine assignments with limited supervision; expand technical knowledge and field capabilities; coordinate with project staff; safely operate equipment; travel locally and out of state, including overnights; operate vehicles and perform routine maintenance; may cross‑train to other field services.
  2. Safety + Compliance – comply with safety procedures: SDS, EAP, PSP, JSA; observe QA/QC processes; identify and evaluate potential hazards; properly select and use PPE; understand traffic control plans; be familiar with governing codes.
  3. Technical – perform entry‑level tasks in Air and Hydro Vacuum Excavation; apply utility locating methods; read technical plans; operate vacuum truck equipment; locate, designate, and mark utilities; perform Level A through D locating tasks; document site conditions via photos/video; use ArcGIS Online SUE Collector; serve as Project Lead on small projects; troubleshoot geophysical issues; inventory and collect utility attributes; conduct passive/inductive sweeps; prepare and maintain site documentation; coordinate with survey personnel.
Qualifications

Experience & Knowledge

Intermediate – developing skills with some practical experience; 3+ years of field experience.

  • Knowledge of field operations, methods, procedures, safety requirements, and environmental considerations associated with civil infrastructure work.
  • Skills include use of industry‑standard tools, equipment, and computer software to perform field tasks, document work, and communicate effectively.
  • Ability to safely operate required equipment, travel locally, regionally, and interstate, with occasional overnight stays, and perform work in varying weather, terrain, and environmental conditions.
Physical / Cognitive Requirements

Tasks are divided between indoor and outdoor settings, with approximately 80% outdoor.

  • Cognitive requirements. Selective attention, oral and written comprehension and expression, problem sensitivity, deductive and inductive reasoning, number facility, etc. Must remain alert while working in lane closure zones adjacent to high traffic.
  • Physical abilities. Hand‑eye coordination, steadiness, strength, control precision, stamina, multi‑limb coordination, manual dexterity, depth perception. Can sit, stand, navigate office and job sites; perform repetitive motions; reach, bend, stoop, carry, lift, push, pull; lift up to 50 lb; walk 3+ miles; climb uneven surfaces.
  • Office conditions. Extensive use of electronic devices; may involve cutting tools and equipment such as rotary paper cutters.
  • Outdoor conditions. Walking/changing on uneven surfaces, confined spaces, extreme weather, high noise, allergens, wildlife hazards.
  • Safety and equipment use. Regular use of PPE, pneumatic, hand, and power tools.
  • Driving and vehicle use. May involve driving large pickups with trailers and occasionally operating watercraft.
Work Hours
  • Full‑time position, 40 hrs per week (overtime may apply).
  • Standard operating hours Monday–Friday 7:30 AM–4:30 PM CST; 1‑hr unpaid lunch; hours may fluctuate for field staff.
Location Flexibility

This position requires in‑person work and is ineligible for remote work.
