Job summary

Austin Community College is seeking a Technician for the Science Lab to prepare, set up, and issue materials for demonstrations, experiments, and exams. You will assist in maintaining instructional labs and help develop laboratory exercises alongside instructors.

Responsibilities include inventorying chemicals, ensuring SDS availability, maintaining equipment, and enforcing safety policies in coordination with ACC EHS.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree required; substitutions allowed with related work experience.
  • Two years related work experience.
  • Knowledge of lab safety and hazard regulations.
  • CPR/First Aid certifications are preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare, assist in developing, perform set-up and clean-up of instructional labs; assist faculty during labs.
  • Maintain inventory of chemicals and SDSs; ensure compliance with regulations.
  • Maintain and calibrate lab equipment; assist with repairs or services as needed.

Job Description Summary

To prepare, set-up and issue materials and equipment for use instudent laboratory demonstrations, experiments, exercises andexams; assists in the operation and maintenance of instructionallabs; participates in the planning and implement of lab exercisesand experiments; assists instructors with thedevelopment/improvement of laboratory exercises.

Description of Duties and Tasks
  • Prepare, assist in developing, perform set-up and clean-up ofinstructional labs; may include assisting the faculty and studentsduring lab experiments, exercises and exams.*
  • Performs annual inventory of all lab chemicals and maintainscurrent list of stored chemicals for labs in accordance with local,state, and federal regulations; provides SDSs information for eachinstructional lab demonstration, experience, exercise andexam.
  • Maintains a working knowledge of a variety of laboratoryequipment and demonstrates the safe and proper use/disposal of equipment including hazardous or biohazardous materials.
  • Prepares, tests, adjusts, modifies, performs routine maintenance on, calibrates a variety of technical laboratoryequipment, trouble-shoots equipment and makes minor repairs and/orarranges for service repair.
  • Ensures lab safety and respond to laboratory emergencies.Maintain working knowledge of health and safetyprocedures/regulations including but not limited to first aid andCPR.
  • Purchases lab and office supplies; track supply budget; obtainapprovals for purchases following established department andcollege processes.
  • Collaborates with faculty and supervisors on the development oflab schedules, procedures, and documents lab procedures.
  • Ensures EHS compliance in the laboratory through properlabeling and storage of equipment and hazardous materials.
  • Partners with ACC EHS Department to ensure policies andprocedures are followed for safe handling of hazardous andbiohazardous materials.
  • May oversee the work of hourly employees.
Knowledge
  • Knowledge of laboratory safety practices.
  • Knowledge of Hazardous Waste storage and disposalregulations.
  • Knowledge of discipline related technical equipment.
  • Knowledge of basic discipline related equipment technicalsupport.
  • Knowledge of instructional lab best practices.
  • Safely handling, using, storing, sterilizing, and disposing ofhazardous materials and/or infectious agents.
  • Basic administrative procedures and practices includinginventory, basic budgeting, purchasing, vendor contacts forsupplies and repairs.
Skills
  • Maintains a regular, consistent work schedule.
  • Ability to provide technical support including 1st linetroubleshooting, maintenance coordination and requests to vendorsfor repairs and replacement of discipline related equipment.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with a multiculturalpopulation including faculty, staff, students and externalparties.
  • Planning annual needs, requisitioning, receiving storing,inventorying, storing and issuing laboratory materials, suppliesand equipment.
  • Maintaining basic budget records.
  • Problem solving and analysis to improve laboratory success andstudent learning.
Technology Skills
  • Ability to use a variety of word processing, spreadsheet,presentation software
  • Ability to setup, use, and maintain related laboratory softwareapplications.
  • Ability to perform 1st line technical support of disciplinerelated equipment, including both hardware and software.
Required Work Experience
  • Two years related work experience.
Preferred Work Experience
  • Work experience in an instructional lab setting.
Required Education
  • Bachelor's degree.

Four years of related work experience may substitute for thiseducation requirement. Applicants who substitute work experience tomeet the education requirement must use additional related work experience to meet the years of "Required Work Experience" for this position. Preferred Education
  • Bachelor's degree or higher in discipline area.
Special Requirements
  • Current CPR Certification.
  • Current First Aid Certification.
  • Valid Texas Driver's License and reliable transportation forassignment at multiple locations and/or for attending meetings ortrainings at various ACC campuses.
Physical Requirements
  • Work is performed in a classroom lab and prep setting and mayinclude field work.
  • Depending on assignment, may have frequent contact withhazardous chemicals and waste.
  • Must be able to lift objects up to 30 lbs.
  • Ability to stand, kneel, sit and reach.
  • Hand/finger dexterity to perform the essential functions,including use of keyboard.
  • Visual ability to perform essential functions.
Safety
  • Work safely and follow safety rules. Report unsafe workingconditions and behavior. Take reasonable and prudent actions toprevent others from engaging in unsafe practices.
Salary Range (PG 05)

$53,029 - $65,683
