Job description

The Laboratory Technician within the Aviation Division is responsible to support aviation faculty and students in the lab and hangar environment in a safe and expedient manner. The position is responsible for maintaining the laboratory/hangar facilities, equipment, and required supplies in a clean and orderly manner to allow the faculty to focus on instructing student learning outcomes.

Under general supervision, the Lab Technician coordinates the preparation of aviation laboratory exercises and activities. This coordination includes ensuring all equipment, tooling, and expendable supplies are in place and sufficient for the requirements of each session. Other duties include, taking inventory and recommending purchases of supplies/materials, as needed, troubleshooting problems and maintaining/repairing equipment. The incumbent must practice good interpersonal skills and be able to work independently. The individual must meet Transportation Security Administration ( TSA ) badging requirements to function in the Airport Operating Area at Piedmont Triad International ( PTI ) airport.

Duties/Functions
  • Prepare and clean up laboratory exercises for aviation courses.
  • Audit tooling, equipment, and facilities both pre and post all laboratory sessions to ensure success.
  • Audit equipment logs for open write ups daily for action, address as required.
  • Enforce GTCC Aviation policy on equipment logs with faculty and students.
  • Troubleshoot, order materials, and repair essential lab equipment.
  • Report on all reported equipment failure, damage, and repair needs.
  • Recommend equipment repair or replacement needs to leadership as required.
  • Perform daily and monthly facility audits, documenting and reporting findings to supervisor.
  • Demonstrate and model the College’s employability skills: adaptability, communication, information processing, problem solving, responsibility and teamwork.
Additional Duties and Responsibilities
  • Maintain equipment and audit records.
  • Perform all duties as assigned by supervisor.
Education Required
  • High School Diploma
  • Valid Federal Aviation Administration ( FAA ) Mechanics Certificate with Airframe and Power plant ratings for Aviation Systems Technology courses or Valid FCC or NCAT ratings for Avionics course.
Education Preferred
  • Associate’s degree in Aviation Maintenance or Avionics with an FAA Airframe License from a regionally accredited post‑secondary institution.
Experience Required
  • Two years relevant work experience in an Aviation Maintenance or Avionics industry/academic laboratory environment
Experience Preferred
  • Post‑secondary lab/shop experience in Aviation Systems Technology or Avionics Technology
  • Experience maintaining and auditing laboratory/shop environments.

Specific Departmental Requirements
  • The individual must meet TSA badging requirements to function in the Airport Operating Area at Piedmont Triad International ( PTI ) airport.
  • Individual must be able to safely operate aircraft and aircraft systems.
Physical Demands
  • May include supporting day and evening and on multiple campuses
  • Position may require standing for extended periods of time, stooping, walking, climbing, and bending to supervise students in confined areas inside, underneath, and on top of aircraft, as well as on elevated work stands and platforms.
  • Exposure to hazardous materials is possible and will require safe handling, use and disposal. Some classes require using flammable and/or inert high pressure gases, and using high pressure hydraulic equipment.
  • Lifting, and the positioning of heavy equipment in preparation for classes and labs is required.
  • Work may be required in an environment that varies from hot to cold (seasonal), which can be both noisy and dusty, and require standing for lengthy periods.
  • Criminal history checks, with acceptable results, are required.
