Harper College invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track faculty position in Aviation Maintenance Technology. The successful candidate will teach FAA-regulated aircraft maintenance courses, support program development, and engage with the aviation industry to promote student success.

The role includes delivering instruction across core topics, supporting labs, and ensuring compliance with FAA requirements. Proficiency with Blackboard LMS is preferred.

Qualifications

  • Current FAA Airframe & Powerplant Certification is required.
  • At least one year of full-time, non-teaching work experience (2,000 hours) in the Aviation industry is required. Must show teaching capabilities related to the community college level instruction.
  • Preferred: Bachelor’s degree in aviation, education, or a related field; additional aviation maintenance, avionics, inspection authorization, military aviation maintenance, or industry-recognized credentials; and five years of teaching and/or work experience as an Aviation Maintenance Technician professional are preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Teach courses in Aviation Maintenance, including Aircraft Blueprint Reading, Aircraft Electrical Systems, Fuel Systems, Hydraulic and Pneumatic Controls, and Engine Air Flow Systems.
  • Engage in continual improvement through professional development.
  • Prepare and deliver curriculum, lectures, activities, and projects.
  • Infuse technology into pedagogical approaches to teaching.
  • Evaluate student performance through assessment, promote student achievement, maintain required student records, and submit grades in a timely manner.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of and familiarity with technology and software, including computers and web-based tools such as Blackboard.

JOB DESCRIPTION
Schedule Information

This position teaches a standard loadof 15 contact hours per semester (30 contact hours per academicyear). This load may include release time to be given for programchair/coordinator duties. Classes may be offered in day, evening,flex learning and/or online modalities. Full-time faculty are alsoexpected to hold weekly office hours on campus to be available forstudent support.

Weeks per fiscal year

Faculty are covered under a 9-monthcontract period from August through May, with the option to teachadditional classes during summer.

ABOUT THE TEAM
Position Description and Duties

Harper College invites applications for a full-time, tenure-trackfaculty position in Aviation Maintenance Technology. The successfulcandidate should be able to demonstrate practical application ofFAA regulatory and compliance requirements while teaching aviationmaintenance technician students, support effective classroom andlab management, and apply community college teaching practices thatpromote student learning.

Candidates should have expertise in aircraft maintenance (Airframeand Powerplant), aircraft components, and FAA regulatory andcompliance requirements. In addition to teaching load, thisposition will support aviation workshops, meetings, event planning,and recruitment. The successful candidate should be able tothoroughly cover aviation industry concepts and guide students inapplying industry standards, regulatory requirements, and bestpractices in and out of the classroom.

The successful candidate will create an effective learningenvironment that promotes aviation students’ critical thinking andproblem-solving abilities. Troubleshooting and classroom managementin a technology-rich environment are necessary. Knowledge of andprior experience with the Blackboard Learning Management System(LMS) is preferred.

Within this program, students can earn an AAS Degree in AviationMaintenance Technology, an AAS Degree in Aviation Management, orcertificates in Airframe Technician, Powerplant Technician, orAirframe and Powerplant Technician.

Responsibilities of the position

Departmental Duties
  • Apply airframe and powerplant maintenance expertise,collaborate with industry partners, manage program projects,communicate effectively, and support practices that maintain FAAcertification.
  • Lead the development, documentation, and completion of the FAAapproval process for the Aviation Maintenance Technology programunder 14 CFR Part 147.
  • Support ongoing FAA compliance, including curriculum alignment,facilities and equipment requirements, student records, andcoordination with FAA representatives.
  • Assist in the review and development of curricula and programsyllabi for the department.
  • Conduct program reviews, annual programmatic updates, andadjunct and dual credit faculty evaluations.
  • Assist in the selection of software, equipment andinstructional materials.
  • Work with advisors, staff, parents, and students to developrecruitment plans and monitor enrollment.
  • Collaborate with campus partners to promote programs, assistwith recruiting prospective students, and develop dual creditpartnerships.
  • Assist in the development of print and digital marketingmaterials.
  • Maintain accurate state and federal records related to theprogram.
  • Manage Aviation Maintenance labs and classrooms, includingequipment, materials, safety practices, and instructionalreadiness.
  • Maintain a positive working relationship with colleagues,community stakeholders, and industry partners.
  • Deliver learner-centered instruction at a variety of times andlocations in response to institutional needs and meet student datareporting deadlines.
  • Meet with students, staff members, and other educators todiscuss students’ instructional programs.
  • Coordinate student placement efforts in aircraft maintenanceand related fields, including employer outreach and careerreadiness support.
  • Develop, maintain, and chair departmental advisory committeeconsisting of industry stakeholders.
  • May be responsible for organizing and managing aviation-relatedevents for the College and community.
  • Other duties as assigned.
