Job summary

The American Red Cross is seeking an IRL Technician to work in the Immunohematology Reference Lab in St Louis, MO. You will perform basic donor and patient testing, interpret results, and provide reference support to hospitals. Responsibilities include handling orders, specimen transport, and quality control of reagents and equipment.

Strong teamwork and computer skills are essential. Qualifications include a biology/chemistry degree and 1 year of blood banking experience; MLT (ASCP)

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Biological Science or Chemistry required.
  • 1 year of blood banking experience preferred.
  • Licensure if required by state.
  • MLT (ASCP) certification required or preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Perform basic donor testing and/or patient testing in the Immunohematology Reference Lab.
  • Interpret results and provide basic reference/consultation to hospitals.
  • Perform automated and manual test procedures on blood samples.
  • Receive and complete orders for antigen negative products by telephone.
  • Coordinate, ship, and transport patient and donor blood samples.
  • Manage supplies and reagents including inspection and quality control.
  • Maintain accurate records and calibrate and maintain equipment.

Perform duties associated with supply and reagent management to include ordering, receiving, inspection, preparation, and quality control of supplies and reagents.* Maintain equipment, reagents and other stock to assure the quality and accuracy of laboratory test procedures.* May perform and interpret basic donor and/or patient testing procedures* Recognize testing irregularities, identify the cause, determine the solution and resolve the problem or refers it to the appropriate level.* Maintain, edit and review computer and manual records to assure accurate record keeping.* Maintain accurate, legible and complete records.* Perform other related duties as necessary.*Standard Schedule*: This position is scheduled M–F, 9:00 a.m.–5:30 p.m., with rotating weekends.***WHAT YOU NEED TO SUCCEED:**** Bachelor's degree in Biological Science or Chemistry. 1 year of blood banking experience.* Minimum MLT (ASCP) certification.* Licensure if required by state* Good written and verbal skills to communicate effectively with internal and external customers. Basic understanding of basic computer applications including Word. Lift, pull, push and move objects of up to 50 pounds. May work in walk-in refrigerator/freezers for periods of time.
