Job summary

Lee County Government seeks a Technician II, Mechanic to diagnose, maintain, and repair a broad fleet of Solid Waste vehicles and heavy equipment. You will work under DOT rules, perform engine and hydraulic system work, and handle brake inspections while ensuring safety and efficiency.

The role requires strong diagnostics, tool handling, and the ability to prioritize tasks in a dynamic environment. Expect a safety‑sensitive setting with diverse equipment and on‑site scheduling.

Qualifications

• Two years of experience repairing light- and heavy-duty trucks, including gas and diesel engines.
• Strong diagnostic capabilities, including reading wiring diagrams and hydraulic system flow charts.
• Proficient with computers and fleet/work order software.
• Ability to work well under pressure while managing deadlines and shifting priorities.

Responsibilities

• Perform diagnostics, preventive maintenance, and repairs on many types of Solid Waste vehicles and heavy equipment.
• Repair and rebuild gasoline and diesel engines, transmissions, differentials, hydraulic systems, and major drivetrain parts.
• Diagnose and repair electrical, electronic, and multiplexing system issues.
• Complete brake inspections and repairs following Federal DOT rules.
• Diagnose and repair hydraulic and electronic hydraulic systems.
• Respond to road calls and perform roadside repairs and tire changes.
• Test vehicles and equipment to identify problems and check repairs.
• Perform welding, body repairs, and basic metal and aluminum fabrication.
• Assign tasks to mechanics, track work progress, and approve completed jobs.
• Create accurate work orders using paper and electronic systems.
• Keep work areas clean and safe, including pressure washing equipment for inspections.
• Follow safety rules, SOPs, and complete work within industry‑standard repair times.
• Work on a wide variety of equipment, including cars, pickup trucks, dump trucks, roll‑off trucks, tractors, forklifts, excavators, wheel loaders, sweepers, semi‑tractors, and trailers.

Help keep Lee County’s Solid Waste operations running safely, reliably, and efficiently. As a Technician II, Mechanic with Lee County Solid Waste, you will play an important role in maintaining and repairing the vehicles and heavy equipment that support daily County services.

This position is great for someone who enjoys hands‑on work, problem‑solving, and working with a skilled team to keep our fleet in good operating condition. Salary is based on your experience, skills, and qualifications.

What You Will Do

What We're Looking For

Experience

• Two years of experience repairing light- and heavy‑duty trucks, including gas and diesel engines.
• Strong diagnostic capabilities, including reading wiring diagrams and hydraulic system flow charts.
• Proficient with computers and fleet/work order software.
• Ability to work well under pressure while managing deadlines and shifting priorities.

Licenses & Certifications

• Valid Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL B) with an acceptable driving record.
• Preferred: Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL A) with no air brake restriction.

Safety

• This is a safety‑sensitive position and is subject to Drug and Alcohol Workplace Testing in accordance with DOT regulations (49 CFR Parts 40 and/or 382).

Additional Requirements

• Must have a complete set of mechanic’s hand and pneumatic tools up to 1 ½".
• Must be able to lift at least 80 pounds.

Preferred

• Five or more years of experience repairing light- and heavy‑duty trucks, including gas and diesel engines.
• Experience with diagnostic software for Mack, Freightliner, International, and Ford.
• ASE certifications.

Work Schedule

• Monday – Friday, 11:00 AM – 8:00 PM
• Rotational Saturdays
• Must be available for weekends, holidays, overtime, and emergency response
• Work may occur at various Fleet Services locations within Solid Waste
