Job summary

IES Communications in Phoenix, AZ is looking for a Technician II - Fiber to install, terminate, test and splice fiber networks across diverse environments.

Qualifications

Job Summary

The Technician II - Fiber is responsible for all aspects of fiber including installing, terminating, testing, and splicing.

Job Duties and Responsibilities
  • Install cabling and terminate copper and fiber connections: CAT 3/5 jacks, faceplates, fiber optic connectors (LC, SC, ST, FC, FDDI, SMA, MPO/MTP).
  • Build closets, mount backboards, cross‑connects, racks, patch panels, fiber optic, and hardware; install grounding.
  • Perform testing and troubleshooting: continuity tests, volt‑ohmmeter, OTDR, PMLS; identify and correct faults.
  • Terminate simplex and duplex jumper cords; breakout loose‑tube fiber (Corning/Commscope, 3DNX).
  • Install fan‑out kits and calculate end‑to‑end loss budgets per TIA/EIA standards.
  • Perform mechanical and fusion splicing and building entrance splices, maintenance space, direct buried splices.
  • Accurately complete IES paperwork: timesheets, material transfers, work orders, change orders, Job Blog, tool transfers.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Physical and Mental Requirements

Self‑motivated, professional, capable of working at heights, ladders, confined spaces; lift up to 50‑75 pounds; stand/walk large job sites; good color vision, hearing, and reading ability; travel within branch or regional territory as required.

Education, Certification, License, and Skill Requirements
  • High School diploma or GED.
  • 5-7 years fiber experience preferred; 0‑2 years for entry level.
  • Proficiency in terminating all connector types and methods for SMF and MMF (Unicam, anaerobic, heat‑cure).
  • Experience with OTDR, PMLS, fusion and mechanical splicing.
  • Industry certifications (Corning/FOA) preferred; data‑center, OSP, confined‑space entry experience preferred.
  • Proficiency with trade tools (screwdrivers, drywall saw, level, tape measure, snips, pliers, hammer, wrench set, cable stripper, flashlight, gloves, punch tool, crimp tool, Krone/3M/BIX).
