Location: Chicago, IL 100% Remote with nearly 100% business travel domestically

Reports to: Regional Service Manager

Standard Schedule: Monday - Friday, 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. CST with one-hour lunch

FLSA Status: Non-exempt/Hourly

Compensation: $27 - $46 per hour

Job Responsibilities: The Service Technician–Electrician travels to customer locations to install, maintain, upgrade, troubleshoot, diagnose, and repair electrical and some mechanical components on Koenig & Bauer printing presses, including pneumatic circuits and peripheral equipment such as Lithec, Baldwin, Technotrans, Harris and Bruno, and BDT. The Service Technician interacts directly with customers, listening to their needs and asking probing questions in preparation for installation or service calls. They must effectively communicate technical information and resolutions to customers with varying technical knowledge. The technician develops a plan of action to address customer issues, emphasizing quality work (fix it right the first time) and efficiency to minimize downtime and control costs.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Troubleshoot electrical and mechanical components, including pneumatic circuits on presses and peripheral equipment.
  • Operate various models and sizes of printing presses to diagnose performance issues.
  • Use a multi-meter and read schematics.
  • Pull cables and connect them on electrical panels using special crimp tools and approved connectors.
  • Troubleshoot problems via software and program parts/modules on-site.
  • Adjust parameters in systems like Mentor or frequency converters.
  • Adjust potentiometers and motors for functions like printing pressure or register alignment.
  • Troubleshoot peripheral equipment such as Lithec, Baldwin, Technotrans, Harris and Bruno, BDT, etc.
  • Coordinate with Koenig & Bauer Germany on machine-specific problems and software issues.
  • Adjust sensors and switches as per instructions.
  • Work on down presses, washing equipment, and other machinery, optimizing settings for best performance.
  • Perform mechanical jobs like opening stripped bolts and working on various press components.
  • Use a scope to monitor power fluctuations and troubleshoot bus issues like Arcnet and CS31.
  • Address safety circuit issues, including relays, stop locks, emergency buttons, safety bars, and gates.
  • Install and troubleshoot software updates and software issues across various control systems.
  • Identify root causes using documentation and resources, plan repairs, procure parts, and coordinate with customers and internal departments.
  • Provide excellent customer service, including greeting, listening, informing, and updating customers during and after service calls.
  • Complete accurate records of work performed, parts used, time, and expenses.
  • Follow all safety and customer site policies, including PPE and workplace conduct.
  • Perform other duties as required based on business needs.

Required Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or GED required; post-high school technical certification preferred.
  • 1-2 years of related experience in printing, press manufacturing, industrial maintenance, or similar.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Windows, programming, networking, and proprietary software tools.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Experience with hand tools and reading electrical schematics and CAD drawings.
  • Strong customer service and communication skills.
  • Ability to travel nearly 100%, including domestic and some international trips.
  • Valid driver’s license and physical ability to perform job duties, including standing, bending, and working with noise and dust.
